Purchased this last fall from the Minnesota Bonsai Society silent auction.

Pretty excited to move this tree along. Pretty good health and foliage as I can tell.
I’m liking the wild trunks and rooting going on.

Came with a bit of carving done on it.

Anyways, I figured I should start a thread as I’m sure I will be getting after this one this spring. My initial plan is to do a re pot and some root management this spring and then let it go. little cleaning.

I would love any advice on this before I go at it.
Like, “if this were my tree......I’d....”

thanks in advance!F0CBD35F-E8C7-4E85-9CB7-AA41D9B217F9.jpeg543A8C23-69AC-47DE-B12C-6C9D1B04F7A3.jpeg4FD3E71D-DAA7-4FFE-B60A-3F74D4645AE7.jpeg

Well thank goodness this hobby found me before this current isolated state!
Got after this garden juniper -purchased from 2019 Minnesota bonsai society fall auction.
At first I drooled over my score!
Upon further inspection, I was a little perplexed by the branch structure and thought, “this is why it only ran me 12$”

After a repot and much pruning, I’m pretty happy with my purchase!

I would like to thin out some areas still- especially on the cascading branch.
Define the apex, and more wiring.

Just not sure how much torture it’ll take!
Any advice on further development / care for this would be much appreciated!
🙏

The repotted juniper looks great! I just repotted mine but didn't trim the foliage because I was concerned and it stressing it too much. What are you currently doing for care?

thanks!
As of now, I’m crossing my fingers!😄
For now, I’ll keep it in partial shade and keep up on maintaining a healthy moisture level.
As you can see, I’ve removed a lot of large roots and maybe 40% of the foliage.
Ive managed to do lots of work on some smaller ones with success, so we will see if I’ve done too much!

Most of the trees are in the garage. Bleh.

I was thinking about putting in this pot. 32A56160-E0AA-482D-9670-27F74563F7E5.jpeg
I think I can squeeze it in there. We will see next year 😁

I bought a couple of these a few years ago for the first time in my life. I gave one to my sister who has all day southern exposure, and the foliage quality became vastly superior compared to mine. Mine only got 4 hours of truly direct sun. I gave mine up for adoption to her after that.

Sun sun sun!

I like where youre taking it! I like the pot change option.

I would repot, tilt right more to get more vertical drop, and let grow rest of year. Im not a big fan of the right piece of deadwood.

Thank you. I like Your suggestion about repotting and tilting it.
I think I may leave it alone this year as it’s fairly weak up top and was potted from original nursery can last spring.

That deadwood. Yeah. Not ready to Lose it entirely. I’ll probably try to get it right until eventually there is nothing left. 🤣

Nice looking tree! You're braver than I am in putting shari on your main branch. Definitely take it easy on the tree for the rest of the year. I saw a thread elsewhere where someone narrowed the live vein too much too fast and the tree promptly died.

Well, just an update on what’s left of this tree.
As @Esolin stated, I think Shari work was too much for it- and I lost my little apex this spring.
Im ok with it now. One more cascading juniper in the world 🤣
The wounds have callused nicely, and lots of new growth. Have just been letting it regain strength.
I would like to repot it in some sort of cliff rock setting. EDCC6643-EECB-4D4C-B0D3-85281B8EB391.jpeg
would like to wire out the bottom mass, but will wait till next year I think.

Aww, too bad about the apex, but the tree still has a nice form. Yes, a rock planting could look very nice. You could also go for a more windswept look too if you don't want yet another cascade, lol. But yes, definitely let it rest until Spring at this point.

Playing with this rock and angle.
This poor thing has filled out a bit this year.
I plan on adding some movement to the straight sections - highest branch. 5A337C29-2021-4FD7-A776-35650A73E19D.jpegC8CF7A45-6368-474A-B10A-0056A9A017AE.jpeg7613AECB-4ECC-4102-A084-B562F8C2B812.jpeg
love hearing suggest! Thank you.

One piece of wire to shape the top branch.
improved I think. 1028437F-316E-43D3-8980-85C62360D130.jpeg

Today. not much different I guess. it’s alive and extending new growth. so that’s good! 7C443140-8496-406A-9687-CF021D44C335.jpeg4C70AA72-B537-413E-A774-8E8BF200ABA4.jpegI would love to get this in a new pot. Just not health enough yet.
