I do most of my “tidying up” of branches smaller than a pinky in fall as well. I am not arguing that. I took away from his post he wanted to do a structural cutback, which is different than a tidy up.

but.. structural pruning on this tree will always be smaller than a pinky?

Yes this is what it looks like now bobby. It’s about 10cm tall. And not very good branching. This is my first winter with a lot of my trees so I’ve been taking my precautions. That being said my fingers are tingling and I’m itching to start working on some of my trees. However lockdown has meant I couldn’t meet bonsai people to help out and so on.
would u suggest cutting those to lower branches now? And would you cut them with at knob cutter? I’ve been told knob cutters don’t make the cleanest cut and therefor don’t heal the wound as nice. Or should I saw it flush with a smal saw?
what other steps would you suggest in starting this small three up again?
