Fertilize.

You may want to consider thinning g some of those buds. Perhaps remove the ones growing straight up and those growing straight down.

While it’s in the “development” stage, it might benefit from a slightly larger pot.

Thanks Adair, it is on a fertilizer schedule alright. Biogold, fish emulsion, some Basacote.

Yeap, that's why I have repotted it to a larger pot in the Spring of 2019.
But now I wonder if this drum pot is not still too small for its development?
In fact I see this tree overpotted right now...

Well, that drum is not a very well styled pot for that tree... but that a WHOLE different discussion.

Here are some Shohin pines I have under “development” right now. You can get an idea of the size I use. As the tree gets closer to being show ready, I start moving it to smaller pots. This helps to shorten internodes and keeping needles short. But, I don’t do that until a have good branch structure.

The last one is a JWP, not a black pine, but as you can see, I have it in a slightly larger pot because I want more foliage growth.

Thank you, @Adair M very helpful!
Down the road I will repot it to a dark brownish unglazed rectangle.
For now I will let it grow in the drum as there is plenty of space compared to the old round pot. I will update this thread from time to time though.😉

Well, I repotted it as the substrate was a little too water retentive.
Went to a rectangle training pot, tilted it slightly to the left, but the apex still will have to move further to the left, so I will let it grow for a while and choose a new apex from the many options that are sprouting.
First and second branches will be wired down even further.
