I have a couple Japanese malpes in the yard that put out some very tall leaders last year. I plan to air layer them but was wondering about the chances of success of attempting more than one air layer on a shoot. I am thinking if I plan to remove a 4’ shoot could I put an air layer at 0’ and 2’ and get two rooted cuttings for the price of one? I suspect the stress might be too much but as an alternative how about just cutting off the upper section and trying to root it and then air layer the other section? Suggestions?
