Always such a pleasure to check in on this thread. You have so many amazing trees, it must be a joy to look throughout your garden.

Nice Ume. With UMe to you just let it grow for bigger trunk, and when will be good to do a trunk chop? ( Size wise)

Thank you very much for your kind words, Wilson!

Because the flower has a strong positive impact on our mental and physical health, I never removed the flower buds on the being trained flowering trees. I can enjoy the flowers while the tree is still in training. In my opinion, it is priceless!
The good time to do trunk chop is in the winter when the tree is leafless. The reason is that it will reduce a lot of stress for the tree regarding to the injury and energy saving.

Today is New Year day. It is too cold with strong dry wind in my area. The Brazilian Rain tree seems sleeping. All of the leaves are "drooling" down!
View attachment 221962 View attachment 221963

However, this ficus are still awake in spite of some yellow leaves. I pruned the long branches back. The ficus is growing fast here. When I bought it in 2007, its trunk base diameter was about 1". Now, it is 7", even though it has been in the bonsai pot all the time.

How cold was it? Just wondering what is the lowest temperature a BRT can take for a few days? Interesting that the leaves are drooling down but did not close

It was about 40 F at that time.
The leaves will completely close when temperature was down to 35 F in my area !

I think this Brazilian Rain Tree is very resilient and can deal very efficiently with weather changes. Do you have yours sitting in the sun all day or its only partial since you are in a similar climate zone? Mine now has around 6 hrs full sun and the rest of the day all shade. I think more we get to the summer less it will get full sun, I hope its not going to be a problem?

Mine has been only received about one hour of morning sun and one hour of afternoon sun last year!
Few years ago, it received 30 minutes of morning sun and 5 hours of afternoon sun from noon to 5 pm.
Comparing both, I see the leaves is more dark green when the tree get less direct sunlight, otherwise the growth rates are the same!
Yes, this tree is very strong to be trained for bonsai ! No doubt !

I took this trident maple out this morning to prepare for transplanting into the clay pot. I pruned all the long branches back to 2 nodes.

Just repotted this Liquidamber orientalis this morning. There is no way to do that myself without Hoyer lift!!
Used the cotton rope to hang the tree!

Tied the other end of the rope to the head of Hoyer lift

Had to use the reciprocal saw to separate the tree from the pot!

The flowers of this ume are fading away now! However, I am still able to enjoy it! The pot is sitting next to the mountain- sea landscape ( Vietnamese calls Hòm non bộ)

I did more carving for this tree today.
I created some hollows.
2 hollows are connected together.

I did not carve the lower trunk yet! I will let it be until next winter. Then, I transplanted it into the square pot! The soil has pumice: orchid seedling barks: fir ground with 1:1:1 ratio
