I was re-browsing Harry Harrington's articles and was thinking about his article on collecting Quercus robur http://www.bonsai4me.com/AdvTech/ATquercus rootpruning and repotting.htm

Does anyone have experience with North American oaks responding similarly to the English oak as discussed in the article? I'm particuarly interested in pin oak and blue oak as they're hardy in zone 5 but any experience with other oak varieties would also be interesting.

I've collected young Coast Live Oaks Quercus agrifolia, After cutting the tap root, I planted them in sphagnum moss that I crushed under water to saturate the cells. Within a year or two they would develop many new feeder roots. Unfortunately I lost them due to an sudden unexpected freeze but did another that's now been in training 15 years.

None were the size that Harry is talking about, though, and Coast Live Oaks are evergreen.
