Nice! Smell good?

A really nice smell, very sweet but almost with a little something spicy on the end of it. Ive only had one other potted mume bloom for me and it was nothing close to this. I imagine it won’t have this many blooms for a long while or possibly never again. No shape or refinement here, but after years of watching it in the ground, feeding it, pruning, chops etc. it is really nice to see such a display.

That’s how I’d describe mine too. Old rose, vanilla, and a hint of cinnamon. Enjoy the display. Mines nearly in full leaf now. Blooms were done almost 3 months ago.

Here is another ume ive been growing for a number of years now. A few chops and in now need of another, but some good movement is there. This one is Omoi no mama. Lots of flower buds, hope they hold up because they are beautiful white and pink. Will need to dig in spring to keep roots in check as I’m sure they are halfway across the property by now!

buds getting a little swollen. straight sections that I missed the opportunity to wire will need to be cut away but I got some movement into some branches last year. Will have to be diligent on wiring this years new growth. I think it’s starting to take shape though after all the years I’ve had it. Looking forward to the show.

As a beginner who's just starting to grow out a batch of various mume cultivars, this thread and progression is really inspiring. Thanks for sharing the journey with us!

You are welcome and thank you!

It's always good for beginners to put stuff in the ground to forget about for a while and allow to grow out. It also teaches you how they respond to chops, growing conditions etc.. I did it with a variety of species. The way I see it, worst case scenario is you dig it and sell it down the road.

Mume are hard to come by(especially on their own roots). Certain colors are VERY hard to come by(especially darker reds/pinks). They are difficult to propagate from cutting as well, or at least in my experience. Good luck with your journey.

found only two spots on the entire tree with two different color flowers on the same branch and what appears to be one pink petal on an otherwise white flower. love nature’s unique surprises.

Make sure you mark that branch and see whether it does the same thing next year. You might be sitting on a new cultivar potential there. I have not seen this in mume before. Anyone?

This reminds me of this from an article by Peter Tea on mume at Aichi-en Bonsai in Japan (the article is also a great read on mume flowering and horticulture). Yours looks a bit darker on the pink vs this is more purple:
