Question about pruning Japanese Maple and Elm tree

If you want a broom you need the consider the height you want the trunk(up to where the branches start) to be before you start, because the trunk will get fatter in time but the height wont change much. With zelkova its like that anyways

Thank you all for your comments. Sorce, that linden by Walter Pall is gorgeous. I have seen his trees for quite some time now. Impressive. It will probably be the style I would like. My question: Should I hard prune the first three branches then? If so, when? I understand now that, as DJTommy and others have said, it will probably stay about this size (7 inches or so), but fatter. Thank you!

Broom style are not typically known for trunk movement. The existing part of the tree that you would let grow is not straight. I would start the ramification process just above where the straight part of the trunk stops. Perhaps that first left heavy branch should be removed and prune back heavily the remaining branches.

Thank you, TwistedTrees. Which branch would you remove? The left from my pov, or the left from the tree's? (Sorry, I know it sounds like a dumb question, but I am trying to visualize it)

Just let it go till your trunk is as fat as you want.....

You can traditional broom it then by whacking it off at the height you want branches....or your broom to start.....with the buds from around the cut....

For a Naturalistic Broom....
Let it grow till you get your trunk thickness.....
Then cut the heavier branching out to great taper....

But more complex!

Ha! Yes, I know it will be way more complex and difficult than it looks now. Then, what I will do is start working on the nebari next spring, and just let it go wild for a while. I will keep it in the colander and just let it grow for another couple of seasons.

I kept mine in colanders for year 2 this year....and wish I would have repotted.

Crap growth..

I'd repot and work the Nebari every spring.
Even if just gently.

What kind of pot do you suggest? A training pot? Or a regular bonsai pot?

I am quite possibly overly colanderishtic.

Colander.

Perhaps you were not following along. We were discussing traditional broom styles as is the award winning tree by Suthin that was being offered as an example of what was wanted.

Lollipop.

I like a Naturalistic Broom in leaf better.

It is more interesting.

IMO.

When following along with the 2 completely different conversations....
It seems bonsaichili is still on the fence.

Of course.... "Which branch would you remove", tells me that bonsaichili doesn't understand yet the steps of a formal broom. So he should read Markyscotts thread.;)

Or maybe you should have told him to let it grow till his trunk is where he wants it then chop it down to the height the broom should start.....
But you would rather argue with me than help a feller out.

If I wasn't following along....
I wouldn't have posted MS's well documented formal broom thread in the first place....

So.....

Who isn't following along?

Having a perfect ring of buds sprout from the cut has only happened for me once....
So to me....the chances of perfect are slim.

I would rather take what I consider to be a faster path to a more interesting tree.

But I don't care in the slightest how BC proceeds....

I will lick either tree to the center...
Lollipop or not.
Not that I am a wise owl...

But I got goals!
