Ryan Neil Bonsai show in Portland?

This has been an interesting thread to read thru. I don't know that anything I could say could contribute to it. I do know Ryan and have spent some time with him myself. I know how this came about and who challeneged Ryan to do something about raising the bar here in the states. My only hope is that he is supported in his effort.

In the close to four decades I have been in Koi, so many similar concerns and comments are made about regional and national shows.
But in this arena there is no one motivated to make a difference. I hope this does not happen to this hobby.

All I can say is that I hope we'll band together and do what we can to encourage Ryan and others to make it happen. It may only be one small step in the right direction, but sometimes the first few steps are the hardest.

For your information Gingko used to be about trees in the first place and Noelanders Trophy is about trees in the firs place.

That is what we were saying Walter. We were using Noelanders and Ginkgo as examples of the correct way to do it.

but thank you for your information, even if we already were aware of it.

I hope for the same things.... I really do.... the first steps can be the hardest for sure....

what is important to me is the integrity of such an event .... and I will challenge anything (as fruitless as my voice might be) that I feel is wrong .... as long as what you and Bob state is the case... then I can and will support it.... I know and trust both of you .... and for the record my impressions were from conversations with both of them and things may simply have changed from what I was aware of or simply have been misunderstood

I think a show like this is exactly what we need! Competition is a great thing! How hard would an Olympic Athlete train if there were no Olympics. A show like this would make deserving trees famous. Ryan's got the right idea!!!

From what I have heard on this side it is going to be an alternating event, Bill will keep doing the Nat. every other year, so it will bounce back and fourth assuming the West show continues, I'd think it would. Ryan wanted to elevate things by starting with the venue, wanted the fine art aspect to the building. He is still helping out with Bills National so can we say East West cooperation.

Someone said regionals, I'd say these have been only local shows/conventions jurried maybe but we haven't been seeing many of the really good trees at these shows that might make it out , especially for a nice fat payday.

I wonder how this is any different than Bill's national show???
Is it just because it is on the west coast? The geography of the US makes it not really feasible to do something like they do in Japan or Europe where travel is far less of an issue. It seems a shame not to build on what Bill has already started..if you want a Kokufu style show anyhow.

How about something like the shohin shows already...alternating years and coasts? (perhaps Bill S's comment might be true) Obviously there are issues with this approach as well but starting something in Portland to compete with Bill's show doesn't make a whole lot sense from any perspective...you will end with a regional show and the same arguments being made from people who live outside the region..its too far to go.

I wonder if its possible to think outside of the box here...is there a better way to do this given our circumstances?

The golden State Bonsai Federation has the yearly conventions north one year south the next year. I think I am getting this from this thread East and west on alternating years. Who has pics of the B.A.B.A SHOW?

Where is the center of the US, wiki says - the geographic center of the entire United States at a point near the town of Lebanon, Kansas. Since 1959 this location still stands as the Geographic Center of the Contiguous United States.

You mean litiguous.

I spent some time with Ryan today and shared what I had read on this forum last night. I am positive that the show is not just for professionals or trees worked on by professionals. I did not read the replys referring to west coast - east coast, alternating years, etc, prior to talking to Ryan today. So don't hold me to this, but I am pretty sure that there has not been a conversation, let alone any agrangement to this idea.

@bob - I really appreciate you taking the time to discuss this with Ryan ... I know he is a busy individual however I think it would be nice if we could get some more information in this regard... it is obvious that interest is high ... heck we are frothing at the mouth it seems (maybe that's just me) ... nothing official obviously but I think it may be time to provide some additional information ... or at least open a dialog ... I won't be getting a chance to talk to him any time soon myself as this penninsula is a a little sheltered from Seattle however it would be nice to hear more...

thanks again bob ... I'm glad you are here to share with us...

I think the reason more information has not been shared yet is that plans have not been finalized. In fact we were brainstorming today about final location, number of trees in the show, cost of entry, vendors, judges, etc.

Thanks Bob for clarifying things. I didn't mean to start a firestorm of controversy by starting this thread. I just thought this event would spark the interest of those on BNut.
Upstate New York is pretty far for me to travel to look at "little trees." Portland on the other hand is much more doable.

As for pics of the BABA show....sorry I forgot the camera.

Discussing Bonsai and the future of Bonsai always draws many opinions and speculation...

Mean while the 3rd US National Bonsai Exhibition is less than 5 months away. Many Artist's
are busy working on their trees and planning their displays. Others are still selecting the tree or trees they
wish to submit. For some, Bonsai is a a true and deep passion and they are excited to be making plans to travel and attend
the Exhibit. Many are traveling long distances including all 3 judges this year and the past two US National Bonsai Exhibitions
have come from Japan and other countries. This years juges are Yasuo Mitsuya, Marc Noelanders, and Pedro Morales.
Many well known Bonsai Artists attend from all parts the USA and Canada as well as those that are not well known but who love Bonsai.
The mood is best described as " magical" for the entire event. The $20,000 in cash awards has already been presented to past award winners.
Two high quality Exhibition Albums featuring 200 of America's finest Bonsai in each one are still available in limited quanties and a must for those
that love to study. If you have a tree excepted, it is an honor and it is rewarding to see your tree presented in this book knowing it is part of Bonsai history.
I would urge all that care about Bonsai in the US to consider submitting a Bonsai, attending, and supporting the 3rd US National Exhibition in any way you can.
I hope to see all of you in June!
