First styling of the Fire RMJ. We cleaned up the deadwood, scrubbed the live veins, and set primary branches today.

Nice work Brian, looking very tree-like.

Thanks for showing, I’ve been looking forward to seeing these trees move along.
Another one coming soon?

I gave one away, killed one styling it too aggressively, and have been changing the foliage on the biggest one...slowly. These shots are from 2013, 2015, and yesterday. I am still not clear on design, other than it will be smaller and an Itoigawa.

Cool, looks like a bit of a wait still but one that will be well worth it.

I still haven’t gotten my hands on any shimp varieties to try grafting with but I do mean to, someday...I’ve been thinking I should contact riversedge about that actually, suggest a trade of some kind.

Looks like you uncovered some nice spiral grain up top there?

Shifted this one to a different pot today, and corrected the planting angle. No root-pruning; the tree was pot-bound and full of healthy roots, but not crazy after 5 years.

I really don’t care for this pot, but it does work with the tree, and it makes it an all-American composition. After it settles in a little, it will get a haircut.

I recently repotted the other RMJ, removing the last of the field soil from the back half.

Look at the difference in root health between the section in the old field soil:

And the strong growth of the roots here the field soil was removed 4 years ago in the last repot:

And here now, with all field soil removed, the tree wired in to a smaller bonsai pot:

Tough to see much with all the original foliage still up front. I’ll reduce that over this growing season, and ideally remove it this fall.
