This is currently my favorite tree. I bought it in July of last year because I wanted an elm but I had no idea what to do with it. I posted here and it got some hate but some folks suggested trying to air layer it.

265817

After it defoliated and I was putting it away I really liked the clump out on the end. So, this March I air layered it.

265818

The layer took a long time to root out so I'm waiting until spring to separate. In the meantime I tried Walter Pall's hedge pruning method on it and it exploded with growth afterward. I was quite happy with that. I have a pot ready to go and will separate in the spring as planned.

This is what it looks like one year later...

265819

After potting it up I will continue to work on ramification and this is going to be a shohin.

My favorite is my olive, though I feel like I haven’t done much, I’ve only had it for some months but it looks very different from when I got it. I’m proud of it and it’s progress in the small amount of time I’ve had it. The last picture is a reference for where I would like to push the tree.

I understand the sheared leaves....no worries there.

It's the remaining structure that I uncomfortable with. I feel like driving in and removing chunks to open it up.

Maybe @Brian Van Fleet can share a tree so he can talk about his bathtub tree. Since I don't have these to understand their branching structure, or how to manage it.

All I know is that congestion bugs me.

Sorce
Well, this isn’t my favorite tree, not even in my top half. A search helped me decode what bathtub tree Sorce was talking about. This nerifolia, that was gifted to me, chopped by me, and regrown as a much shorter bonsai. It’s not dense, but I haven’t spent any time on it this summer, except to repot it. Next year I may have time to prune and wire it, and start pushing density. I like dense nerifolia, but maybe somewhere between mine and Denise’s. Scott wrote a good post on how he develops density in his nerifolia. Check it out.

Ok, I’ll play. This my fav today. Tomorrow maybe a different one. This is a Lodgepole Pine I collected in 2017. Fond memories of a long trudge back to the car with a very heavy rootball. No pack. Here it is after collection.

Last fall was the first style. Here it is on the turntable at the start of work.

Here it is when initial work was done.

Since then it’s been potted in a temporary mica round pot. I lost the chosen position then because all living roots were on the back where the live vein goes down. I’ll repot when I get enough root development. It needs more backbudding and a few more reworkings. But I’m pretty excited about where it could be in a few more years.

I would like to see a Sorce tree. Been waiting for his cooperation along with Smoke! Unless i missed one of their trees in this thread they seem to be missing! I thought that was the purpose of this thread?

This is in pure DE and a strainer (thank you folks) from the goodwill which would place sometime in 2017 when I started realizing that all web searches inevitably led me to bonsainut. A strainer/de has treated me very well. It is a dreaded ERC and I am fully aware. It is healthy and interesting to me consistently despite what it is..complications associated with the species.

Favorite is an odd question to answer, I do have others that will be much better than this one day,but I love this tree for some reason. I’m fond of it not just for being one I have from somewhere around when collecting conifers with success and confidence began to happen (bnut attributed), its non traditional branch structure is weird and challenging (left, back, right..leader!?), I have no clue what to do with it and oddly probably wouldn’t collect this today despite its interesting features.

I know there’s something in there and surely some part of why I admire it. I honestly have no clue how style it (if really possible) and have never even put a wire on it.

I dug it from a rocky clay embankment high up on the side of the road, did not bare root, and have cleaned it and cut it back from wildness since.

It was maybe 3’ long sideways when chopped back at one of two places near the base of the longer jin and again once between middle and ~first branch. The jin is sorta hidden here, but it plays to the long exposed root to the left like a through line.

Any thoughts very welcome, even if you just want to bash erc. Thank you.

Cool thread! I'm pretty proud about this progression. This squamata was dug up from someones yard and I got it cheap. I saw one design in it, that could only be achieved by bending the long branch down. I stuck with the design and now it's slowly getting there:

Back of the tree. Worked on some deadwood this summer:

Next step will be bending the branch closer to the main trunk and adding more movement by hollowing it out and then bending it. Also add shari to the front and fix the jins. For now, it just needs to recover a year or so.

Two year difference:

I bought this tree 2 years ago for $15 I do not think they liked the bendy trunk.
20171014_084925.jpg
I cut it back and put it in a pond basket. And let it grow.
20171015_143916.jpg
I recently took it in to a PBS meeting and got some advice on where to go next.
20181017_214350.jpg
And after some branch removal this is where I stand. It is back budding nicely.

Looking for next steps. Appreciate your input.

My first thought when I saw this is there is a long straight section after the bend.
It may be ok as it ages though.
A different design for sure. Thanks for sharing.

I put this in the other tree thread an hr ago. Then it snowed on it and it’s for sure my favourite tree at this moment in time.

Very simple and self explanatory progression for this one, about three scissor snips 4 wires and 1 repot is all it’s taken so far. 5D915524-3CEA-4BE4-9607-B00574065C26.jpeg

Hi All, long time lurker, seldom poster. This is one of my earlier ones, a Boxwood (forget what type). I have had it for 4 years now, I think, in its second pot. I cruise the big box stores and grab anything that has an interesting trunk. This one did, so I snipped everything that wasn't interesting, and kept the rest.

265953

Oddly enough, I pulled four boxwood bushes 5' in diameter from this same location because they all had blight. This one is perfectly healthy.

This is one of the first trees, with when I decided to get serious about bonsai. Drove 2 hours to pick it up. It was cut back. The new leader was split so it could be rotated. Branches were pulled down and basic pads were created. Now in the process of getting it to fit in a better pot. 2012-2019
