So what does 300.00 material look like?

I don't typically buy $300 pre-bonsai - because I can usually find good stock for less.

However I did pay $350 for this large female princess persimmon. Folks here in Southern Cal know where I got it - and it isn't the cheapest nursery for pre-bonsai. But sometimes you have to part with some money for rare stock, particularly if it is larger.

Other stuff that is more common goes for less. This shimpaku cost me $150...

This silverberry cost me $60...

I think this Mendocino pygmy cypress cost me $225 from Bob Shimon at the GSBF show this year:

Where did you buy your female persimmon? I’d love an older tree. Thank you.

The question I have is..... how long were you in this hobby before you felt comfortable to purchase a $300.00 tree.

1 year in, I'm pretty confident I could probably keep a bunch of these trees alive, absolutely positive that I don't have the knowledge to further the progression past where it is currently at.

I don’t have any $300 material, but this thread is great to show what people are paying for material in different areas of the country. Another great thread by Bananaman, even if this wasn’t his intended direction.
Here are some of my prebonsai. Harlandii Boxwoods were 50 each at a bonsai nursery, the skinny cypress was 60 at a bonsai nursery, the big cypress was 150 from a guy on Craigslist.

Good for you, we have a "don't ask, don't tell" policy, when it comes to my trees.

I get half of that...the "don't ask" part, as in "Don't ask. No way you are spending that much on a damn tree!" ;-P

This Pine was $240.

The pot is an antique Chinese with a kiln crack. $150.

How long have you had that? That tree, that pot....I think that's my favorite conifer pic from a forum that tree is gorgeous and the pot is perfect, congrats man I would love that thing I'd stare at it all day lol, how long have you been training it? How's the apex? Can't tell if it's a steep taper w/ a steep arc or a whorl of primaries @ & near the trunk's top, would love an overhead if you had any already-shot! God I need to get into conifers am genuinely jealous that the only way I can get something like that is to shell out hundreds (which isn't even a consideration for me and I would've guessed that'd cost more, pardon the ignorance but is that a more common conifer specie?), it seems there's jack-$%^ for conifers in FL, I have >100 trees and my conifers are literally limited to 2 bc's from last year, some from this year (just-collected stock), and two store-bought / tiny $5 junipers I'd gotten "to learn with" (and I've learned about nothing, since I got it I wired it into a cascade and left it....it's trunk is marker-thin so WTH approach is there besides simply putting it in-ground for years? Actually I should do just that lol I don't know why I'm wasting space w/ containers when I can jam them in-ground)

If you have any albums or anything showing that through stylings/seasons/etc I'd love to see them, that thing is great and even the concrete slab & bark-mulch bring-out the pot & tree('s trunking), respectively, ie pure contrast on the hard stuff (slab&pot) and deep chasms (deeply fissured trunk-bark, chunky bark-mulch), w/ a different back-drop I'd have made this my desktop (still may lol I like to 'study' trees that way but I've got no conifers to work with so it's pointless....need to setup a trade for one of my better broadleafed deciduous, would learn conifers as fast as I could if I had something remotely as cool as ^ that!!!)

I’ve never spent $300 on a tree, but I’ve spent closer to $200 before. Material on the East Coast is simply more expensive unfortunately.

I want to say this bad boy was $175, if not $125- is that a good price or no? I thought so at the time I bought it. Now, I’m not sure. I think it’s at least worth that much now that I’ve worked on it for a year or two. It’s a trident.

No;).

This is the one tree that I spent 300.00 on. I have spent more and way less. In fact I have better trees that I spent less money on. I just liked this juniper and had to have it. Other than prune it up and define some branching, I havn't really worked on it yet. I've had this juniper two years. I purchased it while my wife was sick and just didn't work on it. Maybe next year.

I'd like to see some other 300.00 trees.

Nice pot, good bends, too small for money spent;).
