These are not benches of Japanese black pine. They are benches to support the single primary branch of the ancient garden tree in the back.

That is one tree? It is a bit odd to say the least.

Wonder if you have to be registered over there to see it. You should if you are not they are a great bunch of folks.

Can't flame or you will get banned. Everyone is very helpful and many of them deal with similar weather that I do.

It's a tradition in some places in Japan to use a low branch of a black pine to make a natural hedge. At least, that's what a friend who belongs to a school led by Japanese masters (Hideo Suzuki for 5 years, and now Keizo Ando) has told me.

Is a parallepipedic hedge of privet more natural, or less grotesque than that?...
