Spreading Plum Yew / Evergreen - cephalotaxus harringtonia 'prostrata'

Has anyone worked with these for bonsai? The tag says frost hardy evergreen. It looked tropical to me but will be nice color this winter since it is evergreen. I got it at Marvin's Building supply. I would really like to get it into a bonsai pot now, but figure it may be risky to cut on the roots this time of year? I figure I can do some cutting this summer while it is in this pot and swap next spring.

Any Ideas?
Michael

I bought a fastigiata in January or february and simply slipped it into a glazed pot identical in volume to the plastic nursery pot it arrived in and all without without disturbing it's roots or pruning anything.

It took a long while for death by frozen roots to become visible.

I also bought seeds of several cephalotaxa and whilst some of these had no problems being frozen into their pots they only showed signs of germination in the middle of May.

We did have reports of -15 C at the time.
