In spring, let new shoots grow. Pull off old leaves. Wire the new shoots while they are still pliable. Put in curves: up/down and side to side. Use aluminum wire. Remove wire when it starts to cut in. About 6 weeks. Cut back! Let grow. Wire. Let grow. Remove wire. Cut back. Repeat as long as it's growing!
This process builds: 1) ramification; 2) gentle curves in branches rather than sharp angles if no wiring is done; 3) taper in the branches.
