So I have been fortunate to know someone that said I could have this tree (height: around 50in/1.3 meters). I won't need to immediately remove it, I can leave it in its natural habitat for quite some time. What are measurements I can take while this tree grows further, to add to its aspect as a future bonsai tree? I heard I should definitely cut back some top growth if the lower branches seem to weaken, but besides that I don't have any clue what I can do / shouldn't do. Thanks for any help and advice, it's very much appreciated :)

Based on the picture it is hard to say what to do with this tree.
I doubt that the lower part of the trunk will bend easily to get more movement in it.

I would wait untill early spring to dig it out of the ground.

well I was thinking I can leave it in the ground anyway for some years, might as well shape it a bit and grow it out further. But yes the lower trunk part might be quite hard to bend, I'll probably grow it out just like this and keep the upper main trunk as a sacrificial
Straight trees sometimes just seem to be hard to get a good sense of direction for the future
