What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

Finally hung up this knife block I’ve had kicking around. It’s right by my door to my rooftop garden, and I think I’ll stash some of my most commonly used tools here so I can easily carry them when I’m doing my daily checks.IMG_1885.jpeg

Oh, and I repotted a mountain hemlock, but I’m yet to pull the pictures I took off my camera. Fertilized all my trees, removed a bunch of wire, top dressed a number of trees. Busy day of bonsai between rain showers!

Went to the wiscobonsai yamadori sale this morning and got a serviceberry.

Then drove across town to the Milwaukee Bonsai Society meeting where I gave away a flat of trees and rooted cuttings and helped club members dig burning bush for our annual invasive species removal dig.

I snagged a buckthorn project. Didn't even use a shovel just a Sawzall to cut it out of the ground.

Got rid of 6 small trees. Obtained 2 larger sized trees.

This batch is giving me my best results so far. The ones pictured aren’t the best. Mark Comstock has taken an interest in mentoring me and I’ve learned a good bit from him. Not surprisingly he has been telling me most of these things for a while but I was too stubborn to do WHAT he says. Some of the upper echelon got planted into individual containers. The rest may be managed again before potting.
I have one of MC’s seedling cuttings. He definitely knows his stuff. Photos immediately post repotting recently

more styling practice on juniper nursery stock. i wanted to try my hand at bunjin and this was the result: a lightning-struck bunjin. i didn’t have a particular vision when starting and let each branch guide me as i wired, starting from the lowest

Repotted my Dawn Redwood. It was incredibly pot bound and had a massive tap root. It appears to have been repotted from a small mesh bag of sorts into a 1 gal pot without removing the bag... interior had bark pieces up to 2", outer half looked like potting soil mixed with pumice. Went into a knockoff Anderson flat.

Technically what I did yesterday but I was busy with celebrating my birthday a day early, sue me!

I also made it down to the tree sale at Wiscobonsai, lots of great values to be had. My choices were a bit limited by not borrowing a truck for transit so I kept my choices on the smaller end of things. I'd been wanting a Hop Hornbeam so I couldn't resist grabbing this tiny guy at a great price.

Additionally an apple clump that should make for an interesting project in the long run. I think the first order of business is using a wedge or guy wire to fan out the trunks a bit. Depending on the fruits i may look into getting some scion material to graft in the pursuit of some small apples.

I know I saw a lot of Madison/Milwaukee club members, I think I saw a few Bonsainuts lurking around too 🤔 ...

3 repots today.

Mugo pine

JWP that sat on a back bench neglected for many years. It's sister pine (bought at the sane time) was repotted last week and pictured earlier in the thread. I tried to decide if I should keep or toss this one for years. It quietly and slowly bulked up its trunk and started barking up. Not looking so bad now so figured I'd keep it and give it a shot at becoming a bonsai.

Last is another mugo with an interesting story. It's got a huge tap root that the trunk turns into. So when first bought this tree and tried to pot it the first time, that huge root was 10 inches long. I cut it back some but had to leave most because most of the roots were deep with almost nothing up top. I cut some windows in the trunk and put root hormones on the cuts. I had to pot it into a 2 gallon bucket and I just left it for years. The bucket is finally starting to get brittle and the trees needs a new "pot". Not knowing what I would find, I anticipated I'd have to use another bucket. To my surprise the tree has grown roots up top. So I was able to cut back the tap root again but it still needs a deeper pot. If this tree survives, I've got pictures from the work years ago and new pictures today and I'll post a progression thread.

Got wrapped up with the chain saw yesterday. The buckeye tree on the right that was on the round headstone was laden with poison ivy vine. It moved the stone downhill a tad but ok. The other stone didn't fair so well andcwas the only casualty I'm aware of.

Ended up with over 14k steps for the day on the heels of a fractured foot.

And with that, repotting season is a wrap!

The root ball was nice and strong at top, with very few large “impediment” roots. Still, I wasn’t able to reduce it as much as I would’ve like, and didn’t have a deeper pot than this, hence the unsightly mound and slightly off center front.IMG_1897.jpeg
Oh well, this pot is just for transitioning the roots out of a nursery, and I wanted something prettier than the chopped down cans I’ve been using mostly.
