I cried
Squirrels are going nuts on my trees every time we go in the house. I have to leave the dog in the yard to protect them.
All of these were knocked over.

My partner caught a squirrel trying to carry this mugo up the tree. They chewed the entire bottom off the pot and ate the roots about halfway into the pot.

But the worst is my hi-no-maru azalea which was completely destroyed. I found some pieces of it in the grass under the tree. Hope a few cuttings survive.

Now I have to go sign my waver for a 24 hour bike ride.

I feel for you. I've been battling squirrels for a couple of years now. Some things worked temporarily, but the only sure defense I've found is hardware cloth cages

or copper mesh wrap for trunks.

They seem to leave my boxwoods and junipers alone, but they're hell on anything in a small pot.

Good luck

All of my good trees are bolted down but the squirrels are actually picking up and carrying the small trees up into the maple tree.

Now that everything from that shelf is in the greenhouse the tropical table is probably next. For getting munched on.

Like the tree thread, a pic required w/each post. Just for fun.
I thought it would be a fun thread for everyone to post what the did today regarding their Bonsai collection, along the lines of the tree thread where a pic is required or it didn't happen w/your post. Before and after even better but not required.
Show us what you did with your bonsai today.
Gave my tamarack forest it's anual hair cut. A lot less growth than usual on it this year. Considering a slightly bigger deeper pot? Does anyone know the story about some cones with a shoot growing out the top?Never seen that with other trees. Next up will be a branch shortening thinning out of the newly purchased Dwarf Japanese larch next to it

Moving a bunch of Acer rubrum maples into bigger pots. They really grow fast. Come spring I’m going to attempt two different Red Maple Forrest settings. These and some smaller ones will be my stock to use. Will have about 30 to pick from. I’ve already pulled 4 from the group because they have developed interesting trunk twists and will be used for single tree bonsai.

This year has been a year of experimentation, I had heard that larch air layer extremely well but rooting from cuttings is next to impossible. This for me on the other hand seems to be the opposite. My attempt at an air layer died off in the span of about a week, in the trees defense I did not use the wire tourniquet method but instead ringed the bark. I assume with this species that's a no go. On the larch I wasn't attempting to air layer, I decided to take cuttings. I believe I took 17 in total. Within 2 months I now have 13 new larches with hopes the rest of the cuttings will root. Very very happy with my experiment. Additionally I had a tiny toad decide to wonder through my zeklova forest. Hope he enjoyed the serenity.20250724_140323.jpg

I am at the do everything dumb all at once and see how many trees I kill phase o_O
Yeah, it happens to the best of us. Stick with it, though. It's very rewarding. Joining my local club is the best thing I ever did in this hobby. I learned more in two years than I did the previous nine doing it on my own.

Oh, don’t worry, there’s no frustration here. Mostly, the trees I kill are volunteers or invasive species that I’m potting up/pruning back out of season to see how hard I can work them. I’ve got an infinite supply, and they needed to come out of the ground for one reason or another anyway. We have hundreds of trees and shrubs on the property (that number is inflated by the choke cherry groves and ever-present buckthorn), so there’s always something that needs to be thinned out or managed. The irony, I suppose, is that fewer trees go into the compost bin now that I try to pot up or take cuttings from everything I pull out.

Anyway, sticking to the rules, here's a photo of that Russian olive I took out the other day. Doesn't seem to have noticed that he lives in a pot now.

They are both doing well.
Cut down and got rid of extra branches on the honeysuckle. It is solid in the pot and still shows reddish color on tje leaves getting the most sun.
I just collected this one not long ago because of its distressed and abused condition. Basically it was bulldozed almost out of the ground and actually is only being fed by one of its two feet. Super unusual looking, maybe a candidate for exposed root mame or something. What do you think? These Honeysuckle don't really offer much to work with.
