Another Crataegus clump. None of the trunks is worth promoting to a single tree. Potting had to be done because fire ants has formed a colony under the roots. Tree had to be pulled out of previous pot and heavily treated for fire ants.

Well, I am not really sure it's necessary, but it can't hurt. Makes it a bit more complicated to get everything laying in the same plane, but so is anything with more than 3 points. I am a real novice at making pots too...

Combining pot making with this hobby is genius! If I had more free time I might do the same.

I am getting old and trying to make time to do what I like to do. Grown up son and no grandkids yet. Still have a few years before I can retire. Pottery is something that interested me since I saw somebody using a pottery wheel on TV as a kid. Bonsai too. Just trying to enjoy myself before it's too late.

That's awesome! I'm trying to do the same thing. :)

A neighbor's 6 year old son is fascinated by bonsai and his parents took him to a nearby nursery where they bought a couple of starter ficus, some pots and some bonsai soil. I volunteered a couple of hours to show the kid and his father how to get started. I had him sifting soil, cutting roots, picking a front, tamping soil into the roots, etc.

Spread the love! Awesome. :)

This is another tree that got post harden pruned and photographed but definitely one that had me concerned this past spring. Quite a few of my junipers(both Sierra and RMJs) struggled with chlorosis this past Spring and on this particular RMJ, it was significantly more concerning. Primarily because it didn't have a lot of foliage going into the year(see 2022 photo) and with its estimated age, recoveries can be significantly slower. Quite a few of the lower branches lost enough foliage that made me certain I was very likely to lose secondary and tertiary branches.

Not knowing exactly what was going on, I decided to send foliage samples for testing after conversing with Ryan. After results returned, we put together a nutritional plan and all trees have rebounded extremely well since, doubly so on this tree. I left a bit more foliage during this go around to maintain strength and amass foliage volume into 2024. No branches were lost.

What nutritional changes were made? Great recovery!

I was using Bio Gold and fish emulsion(like many) but results showed excess chlorine, imbalance of certain ratios and insufficient phosphorus from that regimen. Applied 2 drenches and one foliar feeding of different Eden Blue products(calcium and phosphorus, carbon, silicate in different timing and ratios). Saw immediate improvement within 24 hours of first drench and new growth within 3 days.

Very cool! This is the way!

Very interesting. What did you send as a sample? Foliage? Soil?
