I’ve not worked on bonsai for over 30 years. Two years ago I had a heart ablation and decided I needed to do some to get me “creating” again.
The farm work and cattle have slowed down for a while.
I did three air layering on the double pink Althea
.IMG_1821.jpeg
and one on the Vitex shrub. Studied the base of the shrub to decide if I will pull it from the tub next spring. There is a dead piece in the crown. Wonder what is below ground…

Besides the nursery plants I’ve picked out for projects, there are plenty more subjects to be found on our 400 plus acres.

Collected some more wild olives . The big one I cut through the middle, going to use the root section for the Tom Vuong upside down olive stump technique. Placed the root section in plastic hoping to push growth faster, if anyone has done this I would appreciate any advice.

Attempted my first pruning/styling on a cheap dwarf alberta spruce I picked up at Home Depot.

Every year, day after xmas $5 each. You can get very creative. Unfortunately I have kilt a few.

2 years ago I pulled this tree out of a roof gutter of an abandoned building. I have no idea what species it is.

It had one very long tap root that went along the length of the gutter and very few side roots. I had to cut the tap root to fit it into any sort of pot. However, after I cut the tap root the whole tree died except the bottom 1 inch. This eventually sprouted a bunch of new shoots.

I came up with the idea of having a tree that grew from the base of a dead tree and grew to be something more beautiful than what was there before, but also keeping the original dead portion. So, a phoenix (in the symbolic not in the bonsai sense) but with the dead portion still remaining. The idea entertains me, I hope I can get the idea across in the tree as it develops, I will eventually use sulphur or something to make the dead portion contrast more.

Looks very healthy, I have collected about a dozen now and have had great success with all but one. It is still green but hasn't pushed any new growth, its large and gnarly would make a very interesting tree. I'm not giving up hope yet but it has been a year.

Could it possibly be a male Youpon holly? Looks very similar to one I had when we lived in town…oval leaves, slightly thick, no thorns, grey bark. Birds eat the fruit on the female bush.

Seems that cutling is saved - yesterdays emergency repot and lemon looks much better

those are too young for overwintering - should rather keep them indoor ?
I‘ve grown dozens of pomegranates from seed in the past three years and i would definitely bring those in before a frost. Next year they might be fine outside, depending on the conditions and the variety. Happy growing, from Germany :)

Happy growing, from Germany :)
thanks :)
no idea about variety, tooked them fom grocery store fruit ;)
next year i plan to fuse (its like obsession, I'm walking and looking for fused trees in local park and want my own fused pommegranate)
gonna start some more as soon as i get my hands on another fruit
so for overwintering only cherry will stay outside and i hope it will make it
btw
little guys doing well i guess

I finally repotted my Schefflera. It went from a mica pot to this wooden box. I didn't have the correct pot for it, but I do still need to get the roots to fill the future space.

I gave about 2 inches of space on the three sides and a lot more room underneath the defining branch on the right for the roots to grow into before I force it into its next bonsai pot. It will probably be in this box for a year (or two) depending on how it fills out over the winter.

What is your winter strategy for this tree? Are you doing anything special to promote aerial roots?
I just recently started a Shefflera myself:

My winter strategy is bringing it into the house. It sits on a shelf with a growlight and a heating pad underneath. I would usually defoliate the tree to regrow leaves for indoor lighting and as a method to reduce pests. I didn't defoliate last winter as I had planned on repotting it.

I am not doing anything specific for aerial roots as I feel like they would subtract from the current image the tree presents.

This was what it's grow space was like last year. It was makeshift as I had moved into the place a couple months before.

For my picture tax: This is my growing space as I work on a more permanent space for them. Sorry for the quality of the photo. I had not realized it was so out of focus, but you can still see what is going on.

Well, I’m feeling FOMO for not posting for a while, so here is what I’ve been doing for the last 4 days. Just sitting here. Totally busted my ankle on both sides of the left leg. Have to have surgery on Thursday to put pins in both the tibia and fibula leg bones. If you’re going to pass out, make sure you are sitting or lying down. Bad things happen when you do it standing up. My granddaughter learned a new expression. “Papi’s big boo-boo”. She likes petting my cast. Guess I won’t be looking for trees to dig up for a while. :D🤣

Good luck with the surgery and heal up fast!

Thanks. Good thing is it happened at my daughter’s place so I’ve got her to take care of me. Bad news is the blood clot police don’t want me to drive or fly for 6 weeks after surgery, so I’m Stuck here in Virginia for a while. Hopefully all the Atlantic storms will turn north before they reach Florida.

Destroyed my ankle in a ladder accident at work years ago. Pins and surgery and all, "oh my". lol

I'm gonna give you some advice that I wish someone had given me... For the next... oh, five years or so after it heals... don't go skiing, don't go climbing, don't exert yourself running (don't go running).

The break takes much longer to become fully healed than they tell you and any kind of abuse for the next few years is likely to cause arthritis, and trust me.... you should do anything and everything to avoid it. lol

Sorry about your luck, it isn't fun. But seriously... take it easy for the next few years at least. :)

Picture tax for this and my last comment.
