Like that rustic look.Last night I made a bonsai stand from some reclaimed oak barn lumber that I ran through my planer a while back.

Every year, day after xmas $5 each. You can get very creative. Unfortunately I have kilt a few.Attempted my first pruning/styling on a cheap dwarf alberta spruce I picked up at Home Depot.
Well, here's what I ended up with. I'm glad I had some cheap, probably throwaway material.
Any feedback is welcome
- I think I pruned away too much, and didn't pair branches well
- I think I did a poor job wiring
Looks very healthy, I have collected about a dozen now and have had great success with all but one. It is still green but hasn't pushed any new growth, its large and gnarly would make a very interesting tree. I'm not giving up hope yet but it has been a year.2 years ago I pulled this tree out of a roof gutter of an abandoned building. I have no idea what species it is.
It had one very long tap root that went along the length of the gutter and very few side roots. I had to cut the tap root to fit it into any sort of pot. However, after I cut the tap root the whole tree died except the bottom 1 inch. This eventually sprouted a bunch of new shoots.
I came up with the idea of having a tree that grew from the base of a dead tree and grew to be something more beautiful than what was there before, but also keeping the original dead portion. So, a phoenix (in the symbolic not in the bonsai sense) but with the dead portion still remaining. The idea entertains me, I hope I can get the idea across in the tree as it develops, I will eventually use sulphur or something to make the dead portion contrast more.

Could it possibly be a male Youpon holly? Looks very similar to one I had when we lived in town…oval leaves, slightly thick, no thorns, grey bark. Birds eat the fruit on the female bush.2 years ago I pulled this tree out of a roof gutter of an abandoned building. I have no idea what species it is.

I‘ve grown dozens of pomegranates from seed in the past three years and i would definitely bring those in before a frost. Next year they might be fine outside, depending on the conditions and the variety. Happy growing, from GermanyView attachment 610523
Seems that cutling is saved - yesterdays emergency repot and lemon looks much better

those are too young for overwintering - should rather keep them indoor ?
What is your winter strategy for this tree? Are you doing anything special to promote aerial roots?I finally repotted my Schefflera. It went from a mica pot to this wooden box. I didn't have the correct pot for it, but I do still need to get the roots to fill the future space.
I gave about 2 inches of space on the three sides and a lot more room underneath the defining branch on the right for the roots to grow into before I force it into its next bonsai pot. It will probably be in this box for a year (or two) depending on how it fills out over the winter.

I just recently started a Shefflera myself:

Good luck with the surgery and heal up fast!Well, I’m feeling FOMO for not posting for a while, so here is what I’ve been doing for the last 4 days. Just sitting here. Totally busted my ankle on both sides of the left leg. Have to have surgery on Thursday to put pins in both the tibia and fibula leg bones. If you’re going to pass out, make sure you are sitting or lying down. Bad things happen when you do it standing up. My granddaughter learned a new expression. “Papi’s big boo-boo”. She likes petting my cast. Guess I won’t be looking for trees to dig up for a while.

Thanks. Good thing is it happened at my daughter’s place so I’ve got her to take care of me. Bad news is the blood clot police don’t want me to drive or fly for 6 weeks after surgery, so I’m Stuck here in Virginia for a while. Hopefully all the Atlantic storms will turn north before they reach Florida.Good luck with the surgery and heal up fast!
Destroyed my ankle in a ladder accident at work years ago.
