Hey there folks, how's everyone doing today?
Im currently in West Palm Beach and will be moving up to Port St Lucie in a few months. I'm looking to get some maples that I could grow right on the border of 9b/10a. Can anyone recommend some varieties or tell me any experience they have growing maples in a tropical climate? Thanks

Montpellier maple has a proven record as bonsai and comes from the mediterranean so it's drought and heat tolerant. It will be an evergreen in your climate though. Probably doesn't matter much though, as far as I'm told you southerners dont get much of a fall show anyway

Any deciduous tree that becomes "evergreen" in a warm climate will be far better suited to Florida than it's cold weather family members. Think chinese elm and live oak, I'd look at a list of evergreen maples if I were you. If nothing else it will be fun to read about lesser known trees.

I lived in 9b/10a in Southern California and had no trouble with Japanese and Trident maples - with the exception of our bad water and dry air. In northern Florida, with good water and humid air, I assume they'd do well!

We get exactly none lol. I am dying for the fall show, hence why I want some nice colorful maples. Thanks for the suggestion

What are your winter temps like? I know I could never dream of a Trident here, because it doesn't get cold enough long enough, unless I do some sort of winter refrigeration.

was going to mention that trident maple seems to do well in hot areas but I'm already speaking out of turn on this subject

Never got a freeze, that's for sure. My yard was full of citrus and ficus.

I just put my maples in the shady cool part of my garden where they would get little direct sun.

I live in Delano CA which is in Central Valley. (planting zone 9b)

Our avg temp here in summer is around 98-105.

I have:

Trident Maple - can handle the dryness and sun, but need to be on 50% Shade Cloth to avoid SunBurn
Green Japanese Maple - Strong growth in spring, but struggling in Summer, even in 50% shade cloth, they are having sunburn. But from what im seeing they will survive this season, not sure next season :(
Red Japanese Maple (Novum) - this j maple is the one that doesnt have sign of sunburn under 50%shade cloth.
Kotohime Maple -I have 2 small bonsai died this summer. So Im not planning to take care of any kotohime going forward.

Hope this helps :)

In case your wondering, PH of water here is 6.5-7 PH

We have red maples in the swamps here.
move collected a few little ones and am having fun with them, but they are small so nothing special. One of the biggest, almost 1” trunk, had some color last fall, the rest just kind of faded and dropped their leaves.
I’m out in the western part of the county, some were collected out here, and some up north of the Lake.

Miyasama Trident maple. They thrived in my 9b central Florida climate, very similar to their native Taiwan actually. Can handle full sun except for the tender new growth of 2nd flush in the middle of summer might need some protection. They can be hard to find though.

Alternatively you can keep Japanese Maples in south Florida if you keep them small enough to store in the fridge for a month or two in the winter.

I never got natural fall color in my area. But I found I could trick some plants into turning by moving them to a shady spot at the right time.
