Got an email from Mirai a few days ago about an upcoming "Summer Tree Mercantile" sale on Aug. 24. They haven't posted any advance info on the trees being sold yet, but promised to pre-view them on Insta.

They promise a "thoughtfully curated selection of bonsai trees" whatever that means...

This can mean anything including "we looked at all our bonsai trees and we think these are the ones we don't want to keep".

Ryan: Would you say I have a plethora of Bonsai trees?

Everyone: A what?

Ryan: A plethora

Everyone: O Yes, Ryan, you have a plethora

Ryan: What is a plethora?

Everyone: Why, Ryan?

Ryan: Well, you just told me that I have a plethora, and I would just like to know what it means to have a plethora. I would not like to think that someone would tell someone else he has a plethora, and then find out that that person has no idea what it means to have a plethora.

I hope the "thoughtfully curated" part means they'll have some more affordable, less finished trees similar to some of the ones listed in the (dare I mention it?) recent Eisei-en sale.

i wouldn't say i'm optimistic tho

Apart from some of the high quality collected conifers, a lot of the trees worked on the streams are either nursery or field grown stock. That means if one had a few connections, did some research, made some contacts or happened to do a bit of serious nursery crawling or even collecting, you might stumble upon material like that yourself, at much lower rates. Sorry to say this again

"Might" is the key word. It signifies a certain degree of uncertainty. If we are lucky, we may find decent material quickly but there is no guarantee that we find anything. In our busy lives, sometimes we pay a little extra so we can have decent material. Time spent at looking and research also come at a cost that some of us may not be able to afford.

Prices justified then, no point talking about whats affordable or what isnt. Like poster above. It is what it is right.

"Apart from the high quality collected conifers"?? Uh, err, umm, high-quality collected alpine conifers are pretty much what people are looking for from a sale like this, possibly some superior imported stuff as well, not to mention more advanced trees purchased from capable growers.

Anyone looking at a sale like this and buying things is waaaay past nursery crawling and isn't LOOKING for a nursery crawl candidate (even if they are lucky enough to stumble across a decent candidate, after making the high level connections and web searching until they go blind)

Well said.

The other thing about the “nursery DIY” version is that those trees have a distinct difference from the Mirai trees: they weren’t worked on by Ryan Neil.

To some people, that Mirai provenance is worth something.

It’s apples to oranges really.

Thats not really true though is it, they tend to sell everything listed. Be it previously worked nursery stock, field grown stock or collected trees. Many are just happy to have something worked on by Mirai, didnt some of you come to that conclusion already.
