Used felt bag this time because I am liking results from air pruning my air layers.

IS that Sphagnum and perlite in a felt pot? looks good!
exactly. I use a touch and go kind of method. Start with small wrap of sphagnum, once i strike roots, i uncover i put something around it that will air-prune. I've used gutter mesh too. I am liking the felt because it retains moisture, and is black to protect roots from light. And I've used all types of medium, they all seem to work as long as we strike roots first, this one has leftover bonsai mix. I thought it might be too heavy, but it worked out well too.

Wow! That's a great turn out. I did couple Nishikigawa airlayers this year too. Anyone know how long it would take sphagnum moss to deteriorate? I usually try to get as much out in the spring repot as I can, but it's never 100 percent.

not sure about how long, but i've started using a sieve to grate it down to finer material, to easier clean off the roots. using a water jet nosel, can remove it pretty easy, and the rest would be negligible. Sometimes the roots are too intwined with it that I cant remove all of it, even if it is fine.
