You have a knack for making nice things damaged goods.
Bummed to read about this, but looking forward to how it develops from here.
So...people do use refrigerators for bonsai (especially in areas that are not cold enough for the species they want to grow). What is the trick? Is it possible to humidify the inside enough to not get this kind of damage? Maybe partly cover the tree (with plastic or something else) to cut down on any drafts and raise the humidity in the immediate area?
Nice work...that reminds me I have to go squeeze myself some lemonade
I need to go look around for a tree to take all but one of the branches on....hmmmmm
Whoa! I need to edit and repeat. What I meant to say was, "You have a knack for making nice things from damaged goods." That one missing word changed the whole message that I wanted to say. Sorry! And damaged goods nice things!

Sorry to hear of your misfortune but it appears that you may eventually have even a better tree. I can only imagine your disappointment but am amazed with your skill to adjust and create something great from what is left. Good Job!
Thanks J evans! It was hugely disheartening to say the least. I barely looked at it all last year. Glad I was able to find an acceptable solution. Now the real hard part begins!
Is that an option?!!!I wonder if I should just start sending my maples to summer camp at your house.

Have you ever seen your kiyohime have buds on every branch, and then only throw out leaves on some, but not all, of its branches? That's what is happening to mine. I am wondering if it's just taking its time to wake up. Slightly worried that it means some branches are just stronger than others (not only have the other branches woken up, but they are pushing new growth before some of the branches break their buds!).
I think I might just let my little tree grow this year and leave it alone to gain strength, and then do a trunk chop in the future. just wondered if you've experienced this growth pattern.
man, any advice for kiyohime's? mine hasn't grown like an inch this whole summer! just put out leaves and they just sit there taunting me...i know it's a slow grower....but uhg
i thinkk i may have over potted it. I put it in a much larger container. I am leaving it there the rest of the year. any advice?
