SHOHIN CASCADE Kiyohime

I used to love your old tree and can't wait to see what you will do out of your new material.

Man I think I would have gone through a depression but you just saw a new potential out of it

Well done (again)

You have a knack for making nice things damaged goods.

And damaged goods nice things!

Mach, The Fridge?
I think I remember that post, Damn!

Bummed to read about this, but looking forward to how it develops from here.

So...people do use refrigerators for bonsai (especially in areas that are not cold enough for the species they want to grow). What is the trick? Is it possible to humidify the inside enough to not get this kind of damage? Maybe partly cover the tree (with plastic or something else) to cut down on any drafts and raise the humidity in the immediate area?

Ahhhh. Trick? Treat yourself to a NATIVE collection!

Refrigerators are for beer, and possum meat.

Nice work...that reminds me I have to go squeeze myself some lemonade;)

I need to go look around for a tree to take all but one of the branches on....hmmmmm

Yep! In this business you must be prepared to make lots of lemonade. Bring on the lemons! :D

Whoa! I need to edit and repeat. What I meant to say was, "You have a knack for making nice things from damaged goods." That one missing word changed the whole message that I wanted to say. Sorry!

Sorry to hear of your misfortune but it appears that you may eventually have even a better tree. I can only imagine your disappointment but am amazed with your skill to adjust and create something great from what is left. Good Job!

No worries Thumbless I knew what you meant. BUT... it seems I also have a knack for destroying good things!

Thanks J evans! It was hugely disheartening to say the least. I barely looked at it all last year. Glad I was able to find an acceptable solution. Now the real hard part begins!

Waiting is not "that" difficult! You have a lot to keep you busy meanwhile :p

Excited to see what you can produce in the future here Mach. I wonder if I should just start sending my maples to summer camp at your house.

Have you ever seen your kiyohime have buds on every branch, and then only throw out leaves on some, but not all, of its branches? That's what is happening to mine. I am wondering if it's just taking its time to wake up. Slightly worried that it means some branches are just stronger than others (not only have the other branches woken up, but they are pushing new growth before some of the branches break their buds!).

I think I might just let my little tree grow this year and leave it alone to gain strength, and then do a trunk chop in the future. just wondered if you've experienced this growth pattern.

Yes in my experience this is normal and common. Strongest branches will pop leaves before weaker ones get going. Clearly if buds fail altogether then there is a problem. In due time you should see those weaker buds open. Be sure as you're developing your tree that the strongest shoots are kept in check so that the energy is kept evenly distributed throughout the tree.

If your tree is weak, then yes I think is a good idea to let it be. I am doing the same with the tree in this thread. My goal right now is health=growth.

man, any advice for kiyohime's? mine hasn't grown like an inch this whole summer! just put out leaves and they just sit there taunting me...i know it's a slow grower....but uhg

i thinkk i may have over potted it. I put it in a much larger container. I am leaving it there the rest of the year. any advice?

Don't do anything. If it makes you feel better mine has stalled as well. This is not uncommon. Maples sometimes will pause during the growing season only to start again when you don't expect it. Even if it doesn't grow again, I would not worry as long as the tree looks healthy. Let Mother Nature do its thing. Since yours is over potted, make sure that you don't over water.
