Thoughts on this Pot

Ok, so I have a question . . . . . . . is there a reason potters don't put a whole pile of small holes in the bottom of a pot instead of a few big ones. No mesh required. Sounds like a awfully good idea to me unless I'm missing something......

I have seen very old pots with holes like that.

Akadama break down?

@hometeamrocker "from where I stand" Lol, that's a dav4 line, I'm actually sitting, and I think if Dav4 moved, and was standing in a different place, he would see the same photo, but I could be wrong..,,,,,

Anyway, I can see your healthy understanding of your craft, and it is all paying off. You know exactly what I am talking about. This is a cause to which the effect of is greatness. Cheers.
I want first dibs on something someday!

@Stickroot while I can say, like buying a shitty tree to learn, you have learned from your glaze mistakes, I think King Nut is Correct, you will be better served thinking clay only. Again, someday, a pot and a knife!

Most important, the open conversation, the understanding, the drive demonstrated, the acceptance of criticism, and the apparent putting it to use, is what tells me you both are excelling as we type. This is very exciting.

This thread shines with that excellence, the essence of our ability to learn here.
It should be celebrated!

A true advancing of American Bonsai!
Not just arguing about it!

Thanks Fellas!

Thanks for your good words Source, and everyone else's too. As for small holes, with (hopefully) healthy trees, roots and soil will quickly clog small holes. I'm guilty of maybe too many holes from time to time, but not like my man Stickroot... He's into buckshot! :)

50 cal. buckshot!

Hell you could grow a crown through that thing!

Or put BC in there, and then do Like the, where was JohnG to save these BC's thread.

Or put a spruce forest in there, and put an air compressor to the bottom to blow em around. Like RockM recent thread.

Or we could play a really intense game of peekaboo with Max and Frary.

Or, time travel could pop up in those holes, and BVF can whack him with a root hook, and we can play a proper game of whackamole!

I don't need perfect pots and I'm a fan of lots of drainage.
I could use the jelly bean pot.
Because ficus.

But we stick mesh over our big holes, and that mesh has loads of small holes. What's the difference?

Because the mesh isn't a bunch of small holes. The bigger one in the pot underneath has a larger "draw" on water above, than a relatively smaller one. Smaller holes can not only be clogged by roots, but by simple physics--surface tension in water in small holes stops drainage too. Yes larger drainage holes become clogged over time, that's one of the reasons we repot.

Take a clue from Japanese pots. It is not so much quantity of drainage holes as IT IS LOCATION. I've got big pots with 1/2" drain holes at the center AND IN THE CORNERS that drain perfectly. Those smaller holes don't need to be huge and make the bottom of the pot look like Swiss Cheese. All those holes also tend to weaken the bottom surface structurally.

So this this may be the bottom of a pot, it measures 11 1/2" from corner to corner. I am wondering where you would put holes if it was your pot? I know a lot of you guys are good with photo shop techniques.
Seems like three holes would do the job along with three tie-downs. However, you could get away with just two opposing slightly larger drain holes.

I like it, definitely could make a cool forest in it.

Pitch them triangles to one center hole.

4 wire tie holes.

Nice shape.

I didn't get that alert.

First off, I wouldn't make a pot like that. ;) That is a very hard shape to use effectively with anything. The multiple edges that the viewer sees are too "loud" visually and would distract.

As far as where to put drain holes, it's really pretty simple --A big hole in the center, three more nearer the pot walls spaced evenly around the perimeter.

The holes need to be nearer the edges to stop "ponding" on the surfaces near the walls. The closer the secondary drainage holes are to the central drain, the more space there is between them and the pot wall. Additionally, the center can also be made slightly concave to drain water towards the edges and the drain holes there. That is what is done on more than a couple of my Chinese and Japanese pots...

This pot is nearly a foot across. One hole in the center doesn't seem nearly enough unless it's a very large one. If it were my pot, I would prefer two or three drain holes.

Yes, I will get it out as soon as I get a moment.

Post a picture here and please PM with details when it s done. I am in NO hurry - I won't be using it for a few months anyways. ;)

But I am happy with the glaze, I mixed it myself.
I won't throw it out.
