Just when I said the other day, no more projects...I can't stop this itch I have for one more

Good! Cuz while I fully appreciate the Arctic trident And privet....

Your setup DOES allow you to use "the best"....

So yeah, why not!?

I actually can't believe Smoke is pushing privet...
IMO...junk bonsai.

Great tuff little trees....
But for Christ sake...

Your name is not..

Oh @sorce you crack me up! Scott has ground grown whips...he's going to see which looks like the most roots for me. Since I wish to do this project... They are still dormant...so...I will be setting those roots into their new path when it arrives. Feeling quite accomplished with having been blessed with contacts in my bonsai circle. Raw stock for sure. Since a chop also is in its near future for back budding. I will be rebuilding the material. But...having one grasp the roots are big for me...is cool he is checking those...and selecting accordingly. Excited to set this into motion...

Will have a bench set on my back side of the house's patio. Guests rarely see that area. For my projects. 4 projects that are early in their direction. 3 set up for neagari. One a ROR...my Frankenstein Tamarix...is pushing more branches. But since it's wired as of last year...less ugly. So it's displayed in our common area guests visit. Plus...the wisteria I am ground growing...6 projects total...how did I get to this point. I blame Al. Lol with all his progression of "What is going on in Smoke's backyard. ..."

Speaking with Scott...realistically this should be a 10 year project. So...that said...I will have a count down marked on the tall cylinder I use...to cross the years off. ?...

He mentioned me thinking of air layering the top as well...so chewing on that verses a chop. Undecided yet.

Darlene, Matt Ouwinga has the Trident seedlings you need. By the zillion!

If you are starting any kind of “exposed root” project, either ROR or exposed neagri, you want to start with a one year old seedling. The roots are still very pliable. And you can get them started correctly.

Really, there’s nothing sadder in bonsai than a ROR project where someone tried to take a tree that has lignified roots and wrap them around a rock! Same with neagri.

Well...I don't have much into the project...if I feel the roots don't go together right...I will rethink things...and part ways with this one possibly. It's only about an inch thick...the tree itself. Will keep that in mind. If I am not happy at what I am seeing at repot.

I am curious...if one should use smaller substrate to get less gaping holes in the roots. I mean...I really want this project to not look like azalea roots on my neagari style tree. But more like bound roots...with less busy going on. If that makes sense.

Pulled these photos off eBay...in sold auction search.

I was also under the impression that privet were/made junk bonsai. Not sure where that came from, as I have never even had one. Privet just does not interest me.

Just Pinto right?

Nothing wrong with it....point a to point b.

JBP is a Mustang.
JWP a Ferrari.
Elm a Ranger to a slick F150, F350 of its Machs Yats.
Bristlecone a Bentley.
Ponderosa Dodge Dakota to The Dually Cummins.

It's just that quality that makes these things so.
The difficulty in obtaining or achieving.

The Value we ourselves put on them...

A banging pinto with gold rims and hydraulics is still a pinto.

A bentley with gold rims and hydraulics is ruined!

I see it that way Sorce, especially JWP=Ferrari

What then does trident maple =? Range rover? Toyota?

Spoke to Jonas from Bonsai Tonight trying to figure out size of pumice I should use..read a few of his articles as well. He also felt the specimen I am trying to recreate to a degree. Had mature roots...which is why the upper root section is not as of a tight neagari style. That said...I did send Matthew a message...to see if I could purchase a sapling. What's one more project side by side...just for comparison when complete of the variety of differences in the final exposed root look. Watch me be a hoarder of both...

Lol! It depends on the situation...

If You're Smokes neighbor and following Smokes advice, Trident is any motorcycle, quick acceleration, cheaper than a car(Ca = cheap bonsai) if you don't drive like an ass...
You don't crash, and you have fun.

If you're me and follow Smokes advice...
Trident is any Volkswagen around 2008!

Bullshit!
