I'm guessing since I still have 3-4 months left in the growing season. I planted only 1/4 of my seeds so if they do not grow, I'll be ready for nest spring.

I just got some seeds. Planted last week. We'll know soon if I have a good start or just another flop. ? I've failed every contest so far here.

I had no idea about the contest till today but I ordered my seeds in late May from treeseeds.com and as of today they're pushing their second set of leaves. Some are growing in a collander in potting soil and I plan to plant the collander in a field. All my others are in pots with free draining bonsai soil so I'm in! I'm pretty new to bonsai so I figured from seed is the best way to learn on a budget.
I cold stratified mine for almost 2 weeks with the paper towel method and planted seeds as I noticed them sprouting roots.

All good BN13... what you gotta do now is set up your own personal thread to document your progress! ?

So who is going to compile all the stats on the first year? (Not it!)

What do we need? Seed source, stratification method, approx. germination rate, days to germination, days to cut, height and caliper at x weeks from germination this fall? What else?

Again, not it.

Is the original Bonsai Today article on the forum somewhere or does anyone have a link to it? Would love to actually read it as I've heard so much about it.

@girv ,

there are two articles - one is about growing Japanese black pines
from seed, the other is a chap doing miniatures.

Try making a request in the Forum - General Discussion.
Ask for Bonsai Today 12 and Bonsai Today 20
Good Day

Though the original magazine is no longer in print, the pine from seed article (with the colanders) was bundled in the Master's series Pines book... available at many places but particularly at Stone Lantern publishing.

As Bonsai Nut has said www.stonelantern.com has the Pine Master series book from Bonsai Today and I think it is a better translation and has more info than the magazine article found in Bonsai Today #12 and Bonsai Today #20.

Great thank you both @Bonsai Nut and @theone420 !
You are very welcome. The reason I know is I looked all over for the articles and was able to read them finally. I also purchased the Master addition while I was looking. I believe the articles were translated from a Japanese article and the translation in the master book just seems better and more detailed than the articles. not to mention all the other chapters of great information in the Pine Master Series book.

Thanks for this. All I could find about the book is it's a compilation of BT articles and the editor did his best... Now I trust the 2nd edition of this book more... truly.

One thing I will say about the original BT articles... as they were coming out they seemed very cutting-edge and new (at least for folks here in the US). Now (30 years later) much of the material and information may be dated. A lot that was written about white pine, for example, has been improved upon, and today very few people would recommend following the information in those articles verbatim.

However the "Growing Black Pine from Seed" article in BT 20 remains a classic simply because of how quickly the grower was able to create shohin JBP. As some have pointed out, his process is not optimal for growing larger JBP bonsai. But if you want a shohin JBP from seed in a pot in 6 years... I have yet to see anyone equal (or beat) his accomplishments. Hence the contest.

How about cleaning up the participating threads a bit? There are people that started a thread here that haven't visited the forums in over 4 years...

Hey @Bonsai Nut - any update on the judge for the contest? We're less than a year away! I definitely have a favorite among my three contenders. I doubt it fits into the classic rules, but it's a fun tree.
I don't see any mention of the tree needing to be in a growing container versus bonsai container at the end. I'm debating if I should pot it down, but I think I'm not going to because that would slow the trunk growth.

I have the same issue, don't want to put my trees in a bonsai pot yet, they're not ready for it....
