Buds all dead, trees still alive

I have two small Japanese maples that went through a cold snap unprotected, and now the buds on both appear pretty grey and dried out. Everything else has leafed out except these two. The thing is, they both pass the scratch test. Green cambium. Any suggestions to get ‘em going again? They’ve...

Trident Maples Still Haven't Woken Up

Appreciate the insight! I'll pull it a little bit away from the autowaterer so it just gets splashed every morning, instead of soaked. Fingers crossed! ?

Trident Maples Still Haven't Woken Up

Oh, there are buds! They just haven't really swelled up as I would have imagined they would by this time. Bark looks pretty normal, as well. Do some trees just wake up super late? Could I perhaps be watering too much, given that it hasn't really woken up yet? It's in very free draining soil (DE...

Trident Maples Still Haven't Woken Up

Hi all! My two Trident Maples, here in NY, Zone 6A, have yet to wake up. This was my first winter with them, but they were both in foam coolers, and the scratch test shows green. Does anyone else have experience with this happening? The buds don't even seem to have swelled. Meanwhile, pretty...

    Winter trimming shoots

Can anyone speak to this with regards to Maples? I have some that are quite leggy, and trimming the shoots back would help make winter storage a lot easier.

Chinzan Azalea Hard Cutback to Induce Backbudding

It’s most definitely not growing well. There’s still some very light areas at the tips that aren’t wilted, but everything else has wilted and/or fallen off. My fear is that with no leaves, it won’t make it through winter.

Chinzan Azalea Hard Cutback to Induce Backbudding

Oh, I actually gave it miracid the other day, but then realized fertilizing sick trees is supposed to be a bad idea, so I flushed it like crazy.

Makes sense hahaha And yup, that's been the plan so far. Thanks.

Chinzan Azalea Hard Cutback to Induce Backbudding

Hi all, I have a very sickly chinzan azalea that has gone downhill fast due to excessive heat, and being in claylike soil. I did an emergency repot into good bonsai soil (perhaps foolishly), and am now wondering, since it's lost most of its leaves at this point, would a hard cutback this late in...

Chinzan Azalea with Wilted Leaves (some browning, too)

Drat. What a waste of money. I suppose it's been overwatered, then, since watering has been done on a schedule for about 3-4 weeks, and not as needed.

Chinzan Azalea with Wilted Leaves (some browning, too)

Thanks, Cofga. It’s in light shade now, but things seem to be going downhill. It’s continuing to wilt.

Chinzan Azalea with Wilted Leaves (some browning, too)

Anybody think this tree has a chance? Anything I can do to give it a better chance of survival? If it loses all its leaves going into winter, does that mean it 100% will not wake up in spring? Or, could it make it through winter, and then I could trunk chop it to make it backbud?

Chinzan Azalea with Wilted Leaves (some browning, too)

Oh, man. That would suck. It was pretty expensive. Harrumph The cambium is, indeed, still green.

Chinzan Azalea with Wilted Leaves (some browning, too)

Good point. I did a top dressing refresh when I got it, so it is percolating well. You think I should leave it in a shadier spot, then?

Chinzan Azalea with Wilted Leaves (some browning, too)

Any ideas what might be wrong here? It's well-watered every day. Normally it's in a spot that gets a pretty good amount of sun, so I'm going to be moving it to a shadier spot. Could this be overwatering? Underwatering? Too much sunlight? It was on a drip tray, so maybe too much standing water...

    Bonsai Mirai web site

They just posted a new page saying they're "Working on things on the back end." I'm sure it'll be back up shortly. Probably just an expired certificate, as stated above.

    Good Hose Attachment?

Very well! It’s 2 gallons per minute, so it starts draining out the bottom of each pot pretty quickly.

    Good Hose Attachment?

I was having problems with low water pressure (due in part to the expandable hose I use), so regular nozzles weren't working for me. They were just dumping water out. As such, and since I don't have many trees, I went with one of these...

Is it normal For Trident leaves to look droopy?

I'm a relative newbie, so, to clarify what you're saying, don't fertilize until leaves are hardened off, but pruning can be done while they're still growing? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

What are these "buds" on my Japanese White Pine?

Hahaha harrumph. Well, I'll watch for paling of the new needles. Thanks for all your insights! They're greatly appreciated.

What are these "buds" on my Japanese White Pine?

C'est la vie. It's a training tree, then. Anything I should watch out for with regards to lack of sunlight? Does foliage lighten, or darken, or anything of the sort? Or, can you just not tell until after it's too late?

What are these "buds" on my Japanese White Pine?

Yup, 100% agree. This is more training material than anything. I just want to see if I can keep it alive. And who know! Maybe in 30 years the graft will be indiscernible! Any suggestions on tell-tale signs of lack of sunlight? Will the foliage get paler? Darker?
