) boxwood

material, very food choice of material. Good for instant bonsai

result: windswept, very formal, impressive

critique: too formal, does not look natural, windswept in general is NOT a good idea. It is extremely difficult to make a convincing bonsai. The branches are a bit too straight for my taste, the small and the left trees are fine, the right, large tree is not so good. At least everything was wired, which is essential for such styling. In the long run this will be much better though.

ranking: place 3 of advanced

2) cytisus

material: not so good, but still OK. Good for natural broom form

result: cutting is fine, but no wiring! Why in the world would one not wire EVERYTHING for such a challenge?

No virtual necessary as not styled anyway.

Ranking: place 4 of advanced

3) acacia

material,: very good material for instant bonsai and for immediately pleasing image

result: very convincing, nice natural looking weeping tree. If this is in the right pot it can be shown immediately

critique: This will look as it does now forever. It will not be much better in the longer future, some foliage could have eliminated in the end at some points to make it look a bit lighter.

Virtual: non necessary

ranking: place 2 of advanced

4) azalea

material: excellent choice of material for instant bonsai

result: very good already. The flowers , of course, help it a lot. Very food nebari and tachiagari – really most outstanding for an instant bonsai.

Critique: the silhouette is a bit too geometrical for my taste. The lines are too straight. It would help to make some levels shorter and some longer as shown in the virtual

virtual: the slight changes should show what I mean

ranking: number 1 of advanced

5) rhododendron

material, good material for instant bonsai

result: this would be possible for professional styling to now wait for future growth and then cut back again. It would take a few years for this to look good.

Critique: why in the world did think that this is sufficient for the advanced group? Why did you not leave more branches and wire everything? Well, for the long term challenge you have ruined nothing and could well make up a lot within the next years.

Virtual: this you could have done right away, I think

ranking: number 5 of advanced

About what I has expecting... Harsh but fair.
Thanks for the virt Walter- I was styling with the future in mind. Couldn't just go for the "make it look good right now" solution... I even made that comment to Vin in another thread about the challenge- I knew it wasn't going to show well as an "instant bonsai", but I think- as you said- it will look good in a couple years... Probably will look a lot better by the end of this growing season even. It is already popping a lot of new growth...

Eric, I really like your tree...there are some really good bones there and it should look brilliant as it fills in leading up to next seasons bloom explosion. Nicely done!

Thanks Jedge, that is nice of you to say! Didn't want to post in that thread because they haven't been judged yet, but I liked yours as well! You are off to a good start with your tree and I think you picked the most appropriate style for the species you are working with.

I appreciate the comment...I am anxiously awaiting WP's critique!

Want to thank Vin for taking the time to organize and put on this event. As well as Mr. Pall for taking the time to not only judge, but to give a critique as well!

Before posting this comment, I went through and examined all the entries, beginner, intermediate, advanced... then read all of Mr. Pall's critiques and I gotta say that I think he gave out some very valuable info on how to not only progress with one's trees, but also one's talent. For the most part I think he was very fair and very balanced and did an awesome job!

The only area where I personally would have to differ from his evaluation, would be in the assessment of B-Nut's tree in the advanced category... for me this is the better tree and should have won! Due to the creativity of the tree, which in my book speaks volumes! So, good job B-Nut, and good job everyone who took the time to participate! Mr. Pall, thanks again, for taking the time to do this!
