If you want a maple for your area,check out Amur maple. Not a bad tree for bonsai. Not expensive. Killer red in fall.

Mike is right, Amur maples are good, and super cold hardy. Good color in autumn.

I do like them.
I have a Amur maple 'Flame' i'm working on...
They are super easy to root cuttings also....i made a seedling forest out of the branches.
Odd thing though, i couldn't get root cutting to grow even though they had nice feeder roots....shame.
It looks diff now, that was in summer, I clipped some of the branches off so it doesn't get reverse taper. The lead didn't grow much this year which is disappointing but i let it grow most of the summer cause I've done a lot of root work/chopping over the last few years. This use to be about 5-6ft and it's now about the size of a pop can.

I saw a red maple at a shop, as thick as a pencil for 120RMB, then I saw a trident maple online for only 15RMB, guess which one I bought.Must be nice, anything over 1/2 inch truck is $100+ here. Some rare one $400+ for a 1-2 inch trunk.

I'd have to assume the red maple you saw for sale is a Japanese red maple(Acer palmatum).
I still think you made the right choice based on the prices at which the two were offered.
