Root bound and horizontal roots, two very different things. I would guess your tree is not root bound, do you think it is? Why?

No it’s not root bound yet. I pick it up out of the pot and it’s not completely full yet. But I do recognize it has very long internodes. So I was even considering a trunk chop but thought an air layer would be more resourceful. And then I was thinking I need to put in grow box before I do that. This is all new to me. Have never air layered anything

It looks a lot like my 'Bihou' (several spellings). If it is, it is said to be rather temperamental by maples enthusiasts. Fungal infections, die-back after pruning, etc.
Among about a dozen people, I'm one of the few that have been able to keep it for several years so I think that on its own roots it would be even more fragile. Some maple cultivars can live on their own roots for a couple of years and then suddenly die so I would think twice before you air-layer-it.
Since a cutting and an air-layer are both "clones", I would try summer cuttings first: if they take, and survive, maybe air-layering could be an option.
But I wouldn't be too optimistic.

Those internodes are pretty long to be thinking of air layering.

If you want to keep the cultivar....which you probably do, considering you bought it....keep it in its nursery pot, try a couple air layers this year....then later on, after it beefs up and you've long since separated your layers, you can chop back to below the graft, and probably have yourself a normal green maple.
