Just how many trees do you want in your Trident maple forest? Visit Brussel‘s vendor booth before your workshop and pick out a pot and whatever number of maples fits your vision and budget! Trident maple groves that Brussel Martin has put together are really fantastic, possessing subtle beauty and nuanced interrelationships between the trees. This will be a really GREAT workshop. Start your Trident grove on the path to becoming a masterpiece THIS spring!

I took Brussel's Trident Forrest workshop at this year's ABS in St Louis. It was great, Brussel is super nice and I learned alot about how to create a forrest. Like so many bonsai related activities, building a forrest looks simple, but is actually very difficult. (At least for me, lol!)

Here's a couple of pics... There's Brussel in the background w/ his legendary stache...

I highly recommend this workshop if you are wanting to learn more about tridents and/or Forrest creation.

Arguably the BEST native juniper for bonsai lives right here in Texas. Juniperus asheii or the Ashe juniper is considered a nuisance tree west of I35. But for bonsai artists it is an underexplored and underappreciated gold mine of bonsai material. With some of the finest foliage of any native juniper, it is most reminiscent of shimpaku in bonsai culture. Who better to learn about these great trees from than Dallas artists Howard & Sylvia. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain a better appreciation for the horticultural landscape of the Lone Star State and how to get the best our of this wonderful native juniper in this FREE seminar!

Howard and Sylvia Smith have been working on bonsai together since they began dating in 1994. In 1996, they started “BonsaiSmiths” after spending many weekends on the road visiting bonsai nurseries and acquiring a large number of trees. They attended their first Convention in 1995 which happened to be the ABS Convention in Dallas. Since joining the Bonsai Society of Dallas in 1997, they have held every board position at least once with Sylvia remaining a Board Member to date. Howard has served as President of LSBF as well as a Director in the National Bonsai Foundation. In 2001, after searching several years for the right bonsai teacher, Howard and Sylvia began serious study with Boon Manakitivipart, and are his first and second intensive student graduates respectively.

Both Howard and Sylvia are the resident teachers for the Bonsai Society of Dallas and the Fort Worth Bonsai Society. They both have won many local exhibit honors in both clubs as well as multiple LSBF Best in Show Honors, placed in the top 100 in the World Bonsai Contests, won Best Medium Conifer Display at the BIB exhibit, and have had their trees and client trees displayed at the National Bonsai Exhibits in Rochester, New York. The “BonsaiSmiths” continue to teach via private work sessions, workshops and demos.

Don’t miss the Satsuki workshop with David Kreutz. These Satsuki were hand picked by David from some of the largest nurseries in Japan. Very few individuals in the US know more about cultivating these wonderful trees than he does and nothing creates more bench envy than a well-cultivated Satsuki in bloom in your collection. Visit David’s table early to pick out the tree you’d like to style in his workshop.

Dave Kreutz started in bonsai in 1990 as a hobby. After several years he began working solely with satsuki azaleas and hired Joe Harris to teach him more about them. Eventually, he started a program titled “Satsuki Weekends” that he conducted for seven years, offering several different levels of workshops for satsuki azalea enthusiasts. There were several people who were known for their skills with satsuki hired to conduct the workshops. David later enrolled in a class held in California at El Dorado Bonsai Inc., that were three-year, seven weekends each year, intensives on the care and culture of satsuki azaleas taught by Tatemori Gondo from Osaka, Japan. At the end of the three-year class, Gondo administered a test to the participants, and David earned a certificate that stated he was considered a first level teacher of satsuki azaleas.

After the USDA stopped all imports of material used in bonsai, David was awarded a permit to import plants into an approved quarantine house, he began importing his own trees. Today, David imports outstanding material from five nurseries in Japan. He also conducts workshops and demos for many clubs and conventions in the United States. David continues his study as student of satsuki azaleas, and admits he is still learning new things every year.

Looks like I am going to need a side job to find more bucks for this event. Sounds like there are going to be a lot of things to buy and learn.
Can't wait until Spring.

Bonsai on the Bayou will feature a FREE SEMINAR about the use of Texas Natives in Bonsai Culture - No, this is not a talk about native Texans who do bonsai. This talk will explore the rich, horticultural landscape of the Lone Star State. What Texas trees are known to be great for bonsai? What trees might be good but just haven’t been tried? All of this and much more will be discussed by Austin-area bonsai artist, avid collector, and the President of The Texas State Bonsai Exhibit, Joey McCoy. Make sure to join Joey in this fascinating discussion about the art and culture of bonsai as expressed with native Texas trees.

Joey McCoy has always had an intense fascination with both art and nature for as long as he can remember. Joey graduated from the University of Texas with a BFA in Studio Art (painting, photography, sculpture), and has worked in the family business McCoy Jewelcraft as a gold & silversmith in northwest Austin, Texas. He recalls first seeing bonsai at the age of about 3 while living in Hawaii. The owner of a sushi restaurant, Pearl City Tavern, displayed his collection on his rooftop and Joey remembered being completely mesmerized at such a young age. That love of bonsai stayed with him.

His interest in creating bonsai started in the mid 1980's, where he tried his hand at replicating nature in miniature while working to keep them alive. Joey joined the Austin Bonsai Society in 2003, and said he benefited greatly from the vast knowledge base and resources in the club. Joey has served as President, Vice President, Programs, Exhibit Chair, and he also chaired the state LSBF Convention in 2013. Joey has served on the Texas State Bonsai Exhibit Board since 2006, serving first as Treasurer before being elected Chairman. While there are some amazing and ancient examples of exotic bonsai out there in the world, Joey’s heart is in creating from the material locally available, whether it is collected from the wild or dug from the urban landscape. For Joey, bonsai is not just a hobby, but a passion that often feels like a second job. “Bonsai is thoroughly enjoyable and takes people out of their daily troubles into a world of natural beauty,” Joey said.

A world class event deserves some world class material. Not only has Bonsai on the Bayou worked hard to bring you some very special workshop material, but the caliber of the demo material also has to match the caliber of our headline artists. So we’ve scoured the country to bring you some very high quality material. I literally cannot wait to see what Boon, Ryan and Enrique do with this material! And yes - these trees can come home with you too. They’ll all be available in the auction!

At Bonsai on the Bayou, you’ll get multiple opportunities. First, Boon and Ryan will each have an Artist Spotlight. This will be a limited attendance, “demo in the round“ in which you will have a great seat to see them work up close and personal on some top notch material. Later, all three artists will be up on stage at dinner where you’ll get a second chance to see these fantastic artists at work.

Don’t forget that registration opens on 9/15! Be sure to register early to ensure your spot in both of the Artist Spotlights as they’re priced to sell and will likely go very quickly.

Here’s a rare opportunity to spend a day with Ryan Neil working on some truly spectacular material. These field grown, twisted trunk shimpaku are old and a rare find. Ryan himself suggested these trees for the workshop. Don’t miss this opportunity to work for a full day with one of the rising stars in American Bonsai on some truly unique material. Caliper 2-3”, height 24-30” with strong movement, a great trunk line and outstanding branching.

Be aware that space is limited in this very special, all-day workshop, so register early to ensure your spot. Registration opens at midnight on Saturday, September 15th. So stay up late on Friday night to make sure you get the workshop spot you’re looking for.

Are you a fan of huge collected bald cypress? Have you always wanted one of these monsters for your collection? If so, Bonsai on the Bayou has got you covered. For a very nominal fee, sign up for Clark Long‘s Bald Cypress workshop, then head over his vendor table to purchase the tree you’d like to work on with him from his amazing selection of Bald Cypress yamadori. Clark has dug these trees himself - they will be a fantastic addition to your bench and a definite head turner. Clark has wide range of collected material available so you can set your own price point for this workshop, selecting from younger starter trees to some true BC specimens. Then take your tree to Clark’s workshop to get it started out right and learn how to care for these beautiful Gulf Coast trees.

At Bonsai on the Bayou, we’re working hard to maximize your opportunities to interact with and learn from our headline artists. There are FREE seminars, workshops, demonstrations and “Artist Spotlights”. So just what is an “Artist Spotlight”? It is a limited attendance “demo in the round”. During these two, three hour lecture/demos, Boon and Ryan will work with two demo-quality trees. During their work, they will lecture on styling, care and maintenance, focusing on specific considerations of their selected species. We’re going to let the artists select the trees they wish to use at the convention so they can pick the ones that really illustrate topics that they’d like to lecture about. Everyone at the Artist Spotlight will have a great seat close enough to really see how these artists undertake their work and there will be lots of interaction opportunities. We think that these will be really exciting and fun ways to learn from our featured artists, but act quickly to reserve your spot. Space is limited and spots are going quickly.

Bonsai in the Bayou is a truly international event with great artists from the US and around the world converging in Houston next spring. One of these artists is Will Baddeley - he’s an amazing artist and one of the best wood carvers on the planet. Don’t miss the opportunity to spend a full day with Will learning how to transform that saw cut into a real feature of your tree. This is a rare opportunity and we’ve got some great material to work with - collected Cedar Elms and large caliper field grown Crepe Myrtles. Space is limited and going fast so sign up quickly to reserve your spot in Will’s workshop. Seriously bnutters - don’t wait! 3 workshops are full already as well as 1/2 the spots in Wills workshop.

Happy New Year from Bonsai on the Bayou! New Year‘s Day means that we can finally say that our convention is happening THIS YEAR! In fact, a few short months away. Excitement is growing as workshop, demo and auction material is arriving daily and exhibit trees are being prepped for the convention.

It’s the dead of winter here in Houston. That means mild temperatures, sunny skies and that we Houstonians have broken out our winter clothes.

This weather will likely persist right up through the convention. So say goodbye to those winter blues and come join us in sunny Houston! You have four weeks to lock in early-bird registration rates and plenty of fantastic workshops are still open.

@markyscott, I have a question about registration. The form says full registration gets you access to all seminars, demos and workshops, but it doesn’t mention artist spotlights or exhibit critiques. Are those also included with full registration?
