Is that last one an air layer? It has that kind of look to it.

this will sound weird, but ive been thinking it could actually be a grafted hornbeam. this is carpinus betulus purpurea, thats what was on the label. the stems are red and the leaves emerge with a red tinge before reverting to normal green over summer according to what ive read. i'll soon find out.

do a thread on it soon and see what others think

Very interesting. Thank you for the reply. I'm still learning (always will be) and I adore hornbeams. I am still scouting our mountain for one to collect. I haven't found any suitable yet. Every time I find one I love it's somewhere I'm not allowed to collect it, of course. ;)

this hornbeam is in post 21

yestday i went in and hacked back two of the subtrunks further, i feel the potentiol proportions of the tree will be better now

you can see here clearly some dormant nodes on the stubs, these are all beginning to swell now, this is one of my 'keeper' hornbeams, just starting its journey

what can we learn from this? we can see that ive been hacking back hornbeams all winter right through to spring with positive results
there are more in my greenhouse budding out
pics to follow

thinks its fair to say, the tree was pretty mediocre before.not much in the way of nebari, i think the carving adds some interest and character

I've a mind to go around all the landscape places I crawl in spring and give proprietors a good thrashing!! They can't even give me anything workable like this. Maybe not quite A+ material, but factor in the reasonable cost and availability, and it's busting thru the "door":cool::D:D:D:D:D:D:D

…..and of course, you add your "signature" pretty quick!:D:D:D:D:D:D

Cool!:)

So awesome....
Are these all from landscape nurseries?
Sorry if you've already answered that question.

Hi Mike, yep these are all landscape/hedging material. i have no room for all of these, some were bought to learn on, work on, develop, sell. the last two are back in my allotment now.

It's really cool work and inspiring.
I have one that I dug up this year from a small forest on a friends lot.
It will definitely need carving.

Aaah, Bobby,

Very nice trees.

I'm not S-M at all, so I would probably try to heal the cuts than prolonging them, but I'm following your work with much inerest.

this one was also picked up in last few months, taper isnt bad, just needs time....i think sometimes i cut the branches back to hard though, but as we know, hornbeams bud back profusely and grow fast.
eventually this will have nicely tapered branches, with close in ramification
