@ConorDash wants the one in larger tub, will be a great project for him without costing much
i may keep the wavy one for myself, you dont often get nursery trees with good movement like this, obviously still very raw..
both trees have great options for twin or multi trunk.

Recent work
can't help seeing a smaller, powerful tree in there, maybe its just me?

some work on this one, i didnt like the top of this one much, so reduced it.
i removed a sub trunk at the back and made a hollow...

3 of the hornbeams in this thread have been sold, this one might be available soon

this one was transferred into a training tub. its going to be moved on but i want to keep the oval pot...
think it looks better with the roots planted deeper too.
little bit more deadwood work to add further interest20190822_213357.jpg20190822_210510.jpg

a few weeks ago i decided to remove the lowest branches and to let the top extend, to expose the base and grow the tree as a broom style tree with a thick, solid trunk..
it will probably be sold, but hornbeams are fun to work on none the less
if i still have it over winter i plan on taking some of the hollows on the other side deeper n darker and wiring out the canopy into a broom shape

i removed the straightest, thickest trunk on this one, didnt like it.
so now being trained as a twin trunk, the two which compliment each other best..over the winter some height reduction will be done in the trunks for taper and the tree should be ready for a basic wiring out.
this was a june repot....20190828_134716.jpg

only just saw this! its bounced back as thought it would. hornbeams are such beasts.
can wire out a basic structure over winter, something to look forward too. in some climates folks are tentative to wire over winter and leave until spring, some fear the cold will damage the wired branches and some say that there is no point because the wire doesnt set until the tree starts growing again. me personally, wiring over winter gives me something to do and once the wire is on, the tree is also nice to look at. ive never lost a branch from winter wiring. er ok ,maybe one or two that i constantly bent this way and then that way and then the other way!!!! so best to just get the wire on and then leave alone.

yep thats the feel. over winter this one will be wired and have more carving work done, it will look better.

Recent work on a powerful carpinus, this tree will be for sale shortly...

this tree was worked at the start of the season, image taken today
you can see how rapidly the edges of the carving have began to callus/roll in.hornbeams will do this very well if the wounds are made between to points of growth.vertically or horizontally.
i posted a hornbeam broom earlier where even though i used cut paste at the top of the trunk, there was no growth there to attract sap and the main branch was nearer the back of the tree. so the top front died back at the edge.

on this one ill be able to go in and take these uros deeper.... will be a fun winter project
20190925_164209.jpg

Do they to be bigger uros though? Lol. Put down the dremel for a min :P

But seriously, wouldn’t the smaller holes as they are now, give a better impression of immense size? It gives me that impression now.

not in diameter no, the scale works for me.im talking more in terms of depth and creating more of a rebate inside the walls.

Ah ok I can see them going down in length and depth. You want it spooky looking don’t you?

so this is the other side, the tree was set up for hollows all around the trunk from the offset. by now the tree has adjusted for some winter work.over winter will be able to get in take them deeper, if i have it that long.
again we can see how rapidly hornbeam will produce callus where the sap is flowing.
this would be a very good main tree in a hornbeam forest setting but i dont have the space for such a planting..the slab would take up too much room.
