Slippery Pete
Yamadori
Hi guys,
I wanted to share some photos of the cuttings I took late May/early June. I’ve never made a post on Bnut despite anll I’ve taken from the forum, and I’ve started feeling like a bit of a freeloader since I am well past my 3-year grace period (IYKYK
). So, here are a few photos documenting my humble beginnings to plant propagation.
- The Acer p so far has roughly 75% success rate.
- Styrax sample size still low but ahowing lots of promise overall. Have only tossed ~5 of them but the ones remaining under mist all show plenty of basal wound tissue and root primordia.
- only took 5ish Acer b cuttings. 3 of 5 died.
I used Dip n Grow rooting hormone and closely followed Dirr & Heuser’s Reference Manual of Woody Plant Propagation
-cuttings placed under mist set on interval timer for 8 seconds/9 minutes from 06:30-19:45 every day.
-50/50 sphagnum moss-perlite rooting medium.
Overall I’m really happy with the success of this little operation
There are a few things I’ve learned that will be carried over to next time. For instance I found that my mist was set up too high which created a need to mist more frequently/lengthen the mist duration per 9-minute interval, thus causing the 50-50 mix to become too wet and ultimately leading to a bit of rot in some of the cuttings.
Bonus picture of the bench setup I’ve got in my parents’ backyard …. Anyway thanks for stopping by my inaugural Bnut post.
