First and foremost please remember this is a challenge not a battle! If there are any negative exchanges related to this challenge you will be disqualified. This is a fun challenge that many will hopefully learn and gain valuable experience from.

Plant pot size will be limited to 1 gallon for all levels. Purchase must be made at a non-bonsai related store. Cost cannot exceed $30.00 (unless you live in a “high cost of plant area” and disclose by way of asking on this thread prior to making the purchase). Purchase must be made from September 6 through September 13, 2014. The idea here is to keep the playing field level and to see what you can do with cheap nursery stock so let your conscience be your guide. Proof of purchase will be required.

1. There will be a thread later in the week to post your entry. Participants will post three entry photos to qualify. One photo of tree in the pot as you purchased it, one photo of the nursery where the purchase was made and one photo of the dated receipt. Entries must be posted by Noon September 14, 2014.

2. Tree must be displayed in the pot it came in. You can cut around the rim or take it out of the pot to work on but finished photos must show the tree in its original pot. You can change the display angle anyway you like by placing it another pot or however you wish to do it. Photos must clearly show the tree in the original pot.

3. Top dressing the soil is optional.

4. Final photos will include 1 photo of each side of the tree broken into quarters and one photo taken directly above. Do not include any additional photos.

5. Beginners may post up to three questions about their tree, Intermediates may only post one. Advanced level contestants cannot post any questions.

I’m new at this so please let me know if there is anything we should change. Also, there is still the issue of Judges. We need to come up with a fair and equitable process and find some Judges as well. Any thoughts?

Bill Valavanis is a member here, he may judge if you ask.

I think Owen R is also a member he might judge also.

Photo order can sometimes be erratic here. I suggest a front shot and a top shot. There is no way to confuse the two and the top shot will show 3rd dimensions. This will ensure someones back does not get judged as a front.

Did you do away with the restriction to junipers?

The advanced catagory can use anything. From a pot dude. No Ponderosa pines!

I'm lookin for a mugo to try and coax Vance back. You know he's on stealth mode laughing his ass off.

Hey fellas?

When can we begin work?

Sorce

30 bucks

Where are you people buying 30 dollar one gallon junipers? Hawaii? Paris? For 30 bucks i could get a big 5 gallon can i use that ;)

I like that idea.

Can we use a public street view photo of the nursery, or must I shoot the green sea?

Awesome. La la la la la!

Question why are beginners and intermediate restricties to junipers? Because it's hard to find junipers at random box stores/ gardencenters for some.

If there is enough interest and things don't get out of hand then we're going to do this again in the Spring. We'll look at tree restrictions again at that time. The intent was to keep everyone on a level playing field. If you are interested in participating it would be good to know what is readily available in your area so we can take that into consideration. Thank you very much for your thoughts. I'm sorry but for this go around we're going to stick with junis for beginners and intermediates.

Proof of purchase

What if I already purchased a juni earlier in the year and havent done anything with it, and don't have receipt for it anymore?
I'm assuming this so you could prove that the tree hasn't been worked on yet.
Will a picture of the tree and nursery with a current newspaper in the picture with it be good enough proof that the tree hasn't been touched?

I'm okay with that if everyone else is. Let's hear from a few other first.

This would be fine by me as well. I bought a couple of junis last week and didnt really want to go buy yet another. The only problem I have is I dont think I can find anything as small as 1 gallon exactly. The stuff around here right now is 1.6-2 gallons according to the lables. So if it is strictly one gallon, Im going to have to pass.

They must be sending all the 1 gallon junis down here. Can you post a photo of what you have? Maybe everyone else will be okay with it. Again, I can't stress enough "level playing field" This challenge would miss your presence..

I went out and looked at what I bought last week and was reminded that I had done some pruning on them so they are out.

I went down to the local place near me and managed to find a juniper in a 1.5 gallon pot so that is what I will use.

Does the price tag on the plant serve as proof of price?

*EDIT* Never mind about the price tag, just went back and read the rules again.....wish I had known about the need for the pic of the nursery before >.>.

If it's a box store then a photo is probably not a big deal. Will you pass by the nursery before Saturday?
