Grape - work in progress

[Victrinia Ridgeway]

This is a White Zinfindel Grape that I've had for two years now. I have mostly gotten it healthy (it was nearly dead when I got it) and then let it grow like a fiend last year... this year I planted it into a better pot to get it used to it's new position in life (which is radically different than it was before)... and it has rewarded me with vigor. For my own delight I'll let it have that grape cluster for a time. I'm kind of hoping it's weight will have a "hanging stone" effect on the branch it is on.

There is a bit of rootage curling up at the end. That'll be dealt with in time when the tree has been able to put on a nice set of roots to make up for its loss.

I'll be carving this tree in winter most likely.

My grape is small and modest... the one which belongs to my teacher is marvelous... the whole trunk is hollowed out.... and it's about 3feet+...

Grape is a good subject in the West because there are so many vineyards here.

Belated happy birthday! I don't know how you (and Dan) get those grapes to fruit. I have two in the ground 15 years old, a bonsai nearly that old and one younger one from cutting and have yet to see a grape. They are all Interlaken which is supposed to do well in this area.

Great little tree, I hope to see it again after the carving!

Just a minor correction, though. There isn't a "white zinfandel" grape cultivar. There is only zinfandel, the white zinfandel wine is made from zinfandel grapes, but processed differently.

Well I've seen younger vines produce... so I dunno why you are having problems... that's curious. I did let it go radically followed by a hard pruning in fall. I would imagine that is what triggered some of this.

Dan's was heavy with fruit last year... this one had none of course....

I'll be sure to share photos when I carve it.

The trouble with grape is that the scale insect were comparible in number and size to the fruits,they were lurking under the attractive bark too.

The interesting thing is that the popularity of White Zinfandel wine essentially save the Zinfandel vines, for a while (in the 80's, I think) Zinfandel vines were being removed in favor of more popular varieties. Since then, Zinfandel made it's own comeback, which would not have been possible if White Zinfandel had saved it (even though most Zinfandel snobs look down on White Zinfandel).
