Yeah I saw a bunch in Spain in 2018 or so. Took some seeds home because the foliage was pretty awesome.
Turbinata is the most suited for bonsai but also the rarest. I have just two from seed, maybe zero if the frost got them. Phoenicea var. Phoenicea is more cold hardy.
It seems that they're also genderfluid; both female and male structures on the same plant.
COOL!

You should.. “show me”, when you get a chance.

🤓

I loves’ta learn things.

Paid day off from work. Collection time, repotting and some final winter wiring.

I know nothing about hawthorns. So I watched some Bri'ish videos where people collect them when the buds break. Decided that IF I wanted these, now was the perfect time.

Big haul today. Hawthorn.

The only good use for maples: wedging.

An hour later..

Together with an undocumented specimen it's potted up and stuffed in my back yard.

Repotting done on some sylvestris and JRP. Mixing sphagnum in the soil did produce nice feeders but it just stayed too wet during the winter. Nothing died but they don't look purdy either.

More to come. Having a small coffee break right now.

Sphagnum stuffed in there and a lot of anti bird stuff.

Blaauw juniper air layer from last year. Wood lice got in there. Replaced the moss today with live moss instead of the dry and dead stuff.

More blaauw, JRP, Italian Japanese Venus flytrap.

Twin trunk sylvestris, one year after collecting. Can't wait to fully wire it.

IMG_20210310_162603.jpg
Made some bends this winter, to experiment with approach grafting. Throwaway scots pine.

IMG_20210310_162609.jpg
Can always cut back to the first branch and continue to build a tree. But lets see how this works.

My oldest Red pine. Four or five years old. Always been in a small pot.

Quercus Ilex doesn't like frosts it seems.

Me too! I drink jars of the stuff.
And then I get sweaty, elevated heart rates, issues with focussing and sleeping. But I don't feel more awake than after the first jar.
So I've switched to ginger lemon tea for the rest of the day. Way better!

Unidentified one? I ID'ed them last year when I found them with red berries and hawthorn-looking foliage.
Is the bag really needed? How well do they sprout on their own?
Maybe I shouldn't have made the trunk cuts before collecting them.. Hmm.

At work we have this nice bean machine, ground just seconds before pooring. Second best 'at work' coffee I have had, beats most restaurant stuff.
But like all nice things, it takes moderation. And that's exactly my problem!

Man, this takes me back to my internship at a university (first place 'best at work coffee'). There was a wonderful Colombian young lady that I had a huuuge crush on. She was going to explain to me how to make phylogenetic trees.. And I had to leave the room mere seconds after talking to her, because the butterflies in my stomach combined with twelve double espressos was taking a toll. I think I died twice that day.

In a year or two I might have this moderation stuff down. Both with coffee as well as with trees. Baby steps.

Why I love norwegian type scots pine. This cultivar buds better than JBP. It also way harder to kill.

Rust samples. I'm lucky there are no apple trees around. Not scared of spread, because the intermediate host is absent.

Just to have in the back of your mind, most rosaceae can be an intermediate.
You're right, it seems that there are a couple more species of rust than I knew about.
Oh well, it's either going nuclear or management. Since most of the foliage is going to be replaced with more resistant chinensis, I'm going for management.
