Jurassic Bonsai ???

And now for something completely different...

I have absolutely no idea what this "bonsai" is. The Japanese auction listing does not mention species or plant name, just calling it by the generic word "bonsai". Absolutely bizarre looking. Looks to me like a woody stem plant of some sorts - maybe even a strange fern??

Never seen such a plant, but it looks absolutely great. For a tropical landscape, it is astonishing.

Hi, this looks like Selaginella tamarcina, check out this page (http://danwiz.com/Nov2015/NovPage1.php), starting from the post marked October 24th. It seems to be used for miniature landscapes in Japan. Selaginella is a relative of ferns that is popular in greenhouses. It does not develop wood, so might not be suitable for bonsai, but it looks great here!

Yeah looks like a type of spikemoss... There's some very interesting types, my favorite is called "Peacock" (I think), it turns an electric blue if in shade.

I think some spikemoss could have uses for companion plantings, unique textures and colors... Not sure about all species, but there's some sold here as a perennial, but I think they're borderline cold hardy in zones 6-7
