Kashima time!

NY did you get this from Mark..aka Bonsai Mark Comstock? He has some nice stock to work with and is right in our neck of the woods.

Although you are right about Mark having good stock and I believe he carries Kashima in addition to other varieties, this was not purchased from him.

Winter update. grew well after hard cut back.
It will get wire in spring to take better shape. I like where it is headed.

I'm a lucky guy and excited to share this update. @MACH5 /Sergio has always been very kind to me and I'm sure many of you as well. For the last three years that I have been learning about bonsai he has always been quick to help me out whenever I PM him a question. If you have seen his trees than you know his ability. I sought his advice on this tree shortly after I picked it up and I tried my best to begin implementing a sketch he provided. i hacked it hard last year and let it grow. Now came time for wiring out. Sergio was generous enough to come out and spend the day with me to show me the way. It was nothing short of awesome seeing him do his thing, ask questions and share a few laughs. Watching a true artist at work is quite an experience and even though i did nothing, i was exhausted at the end of the day!!

So onto the tree, the front has been changed from the initial plan. The angle will get changed at next repot as well. I tried to show that in one of the pics. I think the groundwork has been laid for a great outcome. hopefully I can do it justice! I did my best to try and take pictures with my wife's camera instead of my usual iphone shots to try and do this tree and Sergio's work justice, but I am not that good with it. The tree looks great in person. Sergio, thank you my friend.

It was equally a fun and great day for me! Thank you, for letting me work on your tree and learn all at the same time. A wonderful opportunity and most importantly we got to laugh!

I set out a plan for Brian's maple with a sketch. Or so I thought. Upon seeing this tree in person I immediately knew it was going to be impossible to bend the first branch down without doing a very risky notch. More importantly, looking at the base we found a much, much better angle where the nebari was simply outstanding, partly covered with soil in the pics. As a result, we completely changed its front and planting angle. The artificial looking bends will give way to a more natural look once the tree begins to ramify. Most were left longer than needed for the time being. I look forward to seeing Brian further develop this tree!

Nice work NY!

I can only take credit for providing some dirty tools in need of sharpening! All the work was done by Sergio. But i think i learned some things and will be able to implement on other trees going forward. The one on one with a teacher is an excellent experience that everyone should do. Sensei Sergio was a great instructor!

It was entirely my pleasure. Now if I can find some guys who can hop fences with a large scots pine on their back i may be able to repay my debt to you!

Great work ! I assume you have to protect this tree and keep it above freezing now that it has been wired ?

Absolutely. This screwy weather has messed up a number of my trees. Full on days and days of warm, followed up by low 20's. Buds are swelling everywhere and I am moving everything in and out of my garage as needed.

Glad to see you managed to keep this one strong! We have had a series of 30 degree temperatures and so far just lost on Maple. On a bright note some Squirrel planted Crocus bloomed here yesterday and there were actually Bees on them! To me that is a good indicator of better things to come!

Great tree - honest I cannot recall seeing such a good piece to start with in a LONG time ;)

Nice!!

And I would be remiss if I didn't say..."Nice box!!"

Psst.....sometimes I go outside with a flashlight to admire the spring growth on JMs.....is that weird?:D

Great lil' tree!!
