My show tree up and died on me. I suspect some type of fowl play considering the leaves turned black over night....I have 500 to spend.

Folks are going to want to know a few things:
1) Where are you growing the tree (inside or outside)
2) Update your profile so they know the climate you will be keeping it in
3) What's your experience level

These will help people recommend something nice to you that you can care for.

Climate is chicago.
Experience is moderate. I have a number of trees, but I havemy grandfather to help me who has 20 years of experience.
Outdoor or indoor tree. just checking the market.

Are you looking for pre-bonsai stock? Or a finished tree? Pre-bonsai $500 will get you a lot. A finished tree? Hmmm... Even on the West Coast a decent yatsufusa black pine pre-bonsai will set you back $300.

Damn chickens!

One might assume you had some other trees that you might bring up to show tree status; rather than starting from more or less scratch it might be fun to bring one of those up to par.

Do you have a species in mind?

My current tree selection is quite small. I've had trees in the past though. I'm looking for something not finished persay but something that is a little more then pre bonsai status. Something that in 2-3 years could maybe be show worthy. Not nationals, something local.

Maybe Gregory Beach Bonsai.Great supplier I Am told, perhaps contact him too.

What advice has the members of your local club provided?

1.) What was the tree and do you have a picture of the tree??

2. ) What makes you think something happened to the tree as in sabotage?

3.) Why do you not think something you did or did not do caused the problem that killed the tree?

noooes.

And the main question, why kill a tree??

And the main question, why kill a tree??

That's true too but it does not account for the tendency of some people to just be destructive and destroy something that means something to somebody else other than themselves. Also to be figured into the equation is the tendency of people to think more of their own skills than they seem to have evidence for and boast things they have no reason to boast. I have see this as well around here a number if times. We have had people show up on this forum that boast things so outrageous they could not possibly be true.

When I say foul play that includes my neighbor spraying something on their lawn and it blowing on my tree. The tree was doing just fine. I use distilled water. It was a Larch and I kept it kool and out of direct sunlight as much as possible. One morning I went out and the leaves were jet black. Could have been an animal, could have been something I did but this wasnt my first time at the rodeo. My grandfather has had countless trees over the years and he said larch turn brown, not black. Black means chemical. Not saying that is gospel but better than my knowledge.

Been offered this....suggestions?

Deshi I like the pine but I have to say its probably a long time away from showing it. Although its large enough its very young looking, thin trunk, foliage way out from trunk etc. . I am sure all this can be corrected but on Pines especially this is a long process. If this were a Trident Maple, Elm or even most tropicals this work could be accomplished in 2-3 years but on a Pine I would have to say you would looking 6-8 years at least.

Kinda my thought for 400. Would love to find maple or a pine that is more along the path

Someone wants to charge you $400.00 for this tree? What species of tree is it? It looks a lot like a Mugo, the buds don't look like JBP. Either way I don't consider this tree worth $400.00 regardless of what species of Pine it might be. You can buy a large size nursery JBP for $50.00 and cut it down into a bonsai. A Mugo for $35.00 that can be cut down into a decent bonsai. This tree is in need of a drastic reduction or a long term period in the ground. As it is it will take a good while to develop into a bonsai.
