So this is what i think this contest could look like

Mame contest
Entry's from 20-05-2017 untill 20-08-2017 ?
Total length of compo is 3 years.

Search for something to create a mame with.

It could be something from a boxstore or from your own garden or airlayer a part from any tree you got decideous or conifer.

The search will be part 1 of the chalange and each like for your entry is worth 1 point

Part 2 of the contest will be:
The mame piece you found should be potted in a small pot next spring
(it is to late in the season to do repots i think?)
It needs to be kept alive for one year

The update after a year in its small pot again each like recieved is one point

The third year two updates one in summer with leaves and one at the end of the contest in say november 2019 ?

Each update again the likes will be worth one point

The contestent with the mosth points will be the winner

What is the size you see as mame?, it seems on this site its mentioned as 15 cm though in japan this would be below 10cm, even sometimes mentioned as below 7cm with mini bonsai under 10cm.

Mame' is 6" and under as the older books had it.
Under 3" would very taxing for most folk.

Especially, if it had to be tree-like and not just cute.

Sounds fun! I'll play. Better sort through my stuff and and plan for what I could have. More than one entry, okay? I think small bonsai is fun for many reasons including the number and variation.

You are not its for everyone contest im just looking what others would like to see in the contest

@tumblessprimate1

Not sure how to do it with the votes with multiple Entry's
Each tree can be judged separately. Mame are some of my favorite so I'd probably do multiple aswell lol

My books must be older...because I didn't realize that as Adair mentioned...under 2" for Mame. My eyes fell out of my head. What a HUGE size difference. Though, I was reading an forum post on another forum that a friend shared with me, well most know that Jim Lewis and I butted heads a few times over roots. But I admired the man...he speaks of a shohin in Japan being light and airy 13-14" ...you heard me right. Graceful and lightweight.
http://ibonsaiclub.forumotion.com/t14339-bonsai-sizes

...I'm assuming there was twisting Jin or something that put them taller...but, sizes are confusing...my shimpaku was sold as a Mame...its a shy under 6". Before reading this thread I didn't do exact measurement. Will have to go back and check I reckon. Just knew...yup under 6" by a little bit. Closer to 6" than 5".

So any material...is what one is saying. One is allowing three months to figure it out...I will chew it over. Mame is small...I have pots. That's not a problem...but, thinking of what I wish to go with. Any rules of what don't apply?

I have some Elm seedlings around the house in mind. Been wanting to dig up one with interesting leaves.

Another concern...since potting season is behind us. If one would choose larger stock for thicker trunk. I worry of placing in a Mame sized pot next year. I'm more about health and if the species chosen can have such drastic root work done to it.

An idea from the Far East ----------------

Mame' on gravel or set into gravel on a long tray [ plastic ?] slows need to water and handles high heat well.
Saw the image years ago, but could not re-find the image.
Lift once in while to cut escape roots.

I think thats something to keep in mind while searching for suitable material tough

@Anthony
Thnx for the idea!
How one keeps it alive troughout the three years is up to the participants and anything they come up with will be fine as long it stays in the mame sized pot !

Does anyone know if there are guidelines on the max size a mame pot is allowed to be ?

I like your contest...but, if I can find something with character that is health concerning...I may pass on the contest in favor of the tree and health. But, will tip my hat in your direction for the direction of the project.
