My mind immediately went to this thread when I saw the video.
Rick has been really personable to be in my interactions online and when he organised the shipment of his book to the UK for me. His videos have been an excellent resource for me and my 4 year old daughter in understanding Satsuki bonsai.
I also think his book is great for what he set out to achieve. It lays down the fundamentals in an easily understandable way with great bits of tangential information that allows the reader to understand not just the ‘how and when’ but also the ‘why’.
I think this talk of internet trolls is an unfortunate crossing of wires - somebody saying that his book doesn’t cover advanced techniques isn’t an attack - it’s a statement that will help others looking into the book to understand its type.
It’s not sold as an encyclopaedia of Satsuki azalea bonsai knowledge from fundamental to advanced and Rick acknowledges this himself.
I’ve never created anything as open to public criticism as a book so I can’t put myself in his shoes. However, I hope he can find a way to step back and reinterpret comments. I particularly hope that he continues to create videos on Satsuki bonsai (and maybe even a follow up edition of his book!) as he’s created real value in the work he’s put out there!
