No such thing as asking a stupid question. I hope.

Hopefully I'm not starting to.ask them now.
Is it possible to graft hinoki cypress limbs onto arborvite trunks. I'm pretty sure they graft hinoki cypress scions onto arborvite root stock. Right? So if a person had the opportunity to collect a gnarly arborvite and didn't like the foliage and had a hinoki that might not be the best candidate.for bonsai couldn't they graft the nice hinoki foliage onto said badass arborvite trunk?

I have heard that it is possible. I don't remember the source or even if the source was or is credible but; it is an interesting question to ask, an interesting answer would be even better---with a how-to-do!

Nick Lenz discusses this at length in "Bonsai From the Wild". He describes the process of grafting Hinoki to arborvitae in detail, and includes several progression pictures of a cedar with hinoki foliage.

Excellent. Those are the answers I was looking for. I can collect an arborvite from in front of an abandoned house one of my friends bought last year. The plant has been run over and cut back a few times for God knows how long. I've also got a kosteri hinoki cypress that has no foliage close to the trunk and is also grafted onto about an 8" root stock plant. Probably cedar or arborvite. So I'm going to dig the arborvite in the spring, get it healthy and try some grafting the next year. If it works cool if not oh well. Nothing ventured nothing gained. Oh yeah I've never grafted anything so this could be very interesting. We'll see what happens.
