Reid's shohin thread

This little ‘Hokkaido’ Chinese Elm was ready for a smaller pot. The former pot is underneath.

I need to trim up some of the branches to give space for the dense foliage. The left trunk got a hard upper prune for taper.

The tree had corked up nicely, but over the last year I hadn’t kept the lower moss under control. The moss caused a lot of the cork to rot away. I’ll be rebuilding that, too…

I trimmed this dwarf mugo pine back to mature inner buds. It will benefit from some needle plucking.

I’m being cautious with my work, as it’s still a bit cold at night.

These trees (birch and crabapple) are looking happy

My hawthorn is going to bloom for the first time ever! I don’t yet know what color it will be, but I can see at least two clusters
Looking very happy! I like that your letting the branches grow up like a big deciduous would!

Here’s a young Scots pine I had sitting around, thickening up. It has received a bit of attention here and there… it’s a project without a whole lot of focus.

The trunk has put on some nice girth and I think the path forward is to transition to desirable branches and then to put nice movement into them.

It’s about 6" tall and the trunk diameter is about 1.25" so it’s nice a chunky.

Hi Reid , nice start.
This would be a good time to wire down the branch on the right, before it is cut back for design. Easier bend with the longer leverage. That would allow the interior branches to come off at better angles in the future. Also opens up the area and keeps those interior buds healthier. Not a big change but possibly a small step forward.

I did a (nearly) full wiring on the neagari cascade Douglas-fir:

It was nice to finally use a fair bit of my 12, 14, and 16 AWG wire. I’ve been going through a ton of 4, 6, and 8 AWG wire in recent years!

Looks good Reid. Any updates on that new garden you started? Would love to see how that’s coming along.

Thanks for asking!

Well it’s started but has been in a holding pattern for a bit. I finished the fence in June and worked on a vegetable garden in July and August. I’ve honestly been in a depressive funk and haven’t yet followed through on the bonsai garden work.

Just recently I got landscaping fabric applied inside the fence area to slowly and safely kill the grass. In 2021 I’m expecting to work on a nice design with coarse gravel, large paver bricks, and some native landscaping around the margins.

For now, here’s the functional space with great southern exposure:

The existing roses, dahlias, calendula, boxwood, and hydrangea will all be kicked out of the bonsai garden :)

I forgot to brag about my kale and collards. I’ve been waging battles with mealybugs, aphids, and caterpillars (cabbage looper and Diamondback moth), but things are holding steady with me slightly ahead in the war of attrition.

Looking great so far dude. That fence is a great backdrop. I too have been in quite the funk all year. I’m just deciding it’s ok to not entirely be ok. With 3 kids shit has been hard through it all. To make matters worse, my bonsai have suffered considerably!! Fungus and other issues have taken hold of some of my best. Alas. Still brings me joy to look at these tiny trees though. Thanks for sharing yours!!

The good news for us all is that 2020 is almost over!

Great looking garden and shohin, @parhamr

Thanks for all of the affirmation 😊
