Repotting season is on!

Sargent’s crabapple grown from seed by Scott Elser; pot by Charles Iker:

Its growth is pretty coarse. I’m still figuring out this species.

Hawthorn grown from seed by myself; pot by Reddit user Kanashimi-ni:

I’d like to reduce and refine the upper left branch and the apex. I’m expecting this tiny pot will help me keep the new growths wonderfully delicatez

Here’s a young Korean Hornbeam. I gave it two growing seasons in a 1-gallon grow bag and now I’m transitioning it to finer soil.

It needs taper to the trunk and further development of the branching. Improving the soil and reducing the depth of the pot should set me up well for the near future.

What kind of Hawthorn is that? And why no flowers this year, are you pruning them off? Just curious. Nice batch of little trees!

Thanks!

It should be the common laevigata species. It’s possibly from a Paul’s Scarlet tree, but since this is from seed it’s unlikely to display special cultivar traits.

None of my hawthorns have yet to bloom, as I think they’re too young. I’m eagerly awaiting their first blooms but still working on development, so it’s possible I’ve trimmed off some buds that could flower. I need to take a close look at some street trees to see which buds turn to flowers.

The White Birch are doing well this year so I gave them a harder prune…

Height: 6.5"
Trunk diameter: 1.375"

I’ve been focusing on improving the internode lengths; this one is 0.75" and about the max I should allow:

My mom has kept all three of the trees alive that I gave to her in March 2017!

The Hinoki is looking great, barking up with tight growth. The bottom sacrificial branches can soon be removed

The dwarf holly still looks pretty boring, but it’s a bit less sparse

The shimpaku has had some moderate scale infestation. It’s ready for an aggressive wiring and styling

Any updates on the Mugo's?

I have a bag of seeds I got for free and I am still vacillating about whether or not I want to try them.

Huh, I forgot to update this thread for the mugo.

I sold all but one. In summer 2019 I repotted it:

Now I need to wait for some back buds to refine some of those longer branches.

Looks nice. What kind of Hawthorne is that?
Thanks!

I’m not fully sure. I think it’s Crataegus laevigata, but it’s possibly monogyna. If it flowers and fruits I should then know the difference.

The sargentii crabapple has pushed a lot of growth.

Thread or approach grafting may be useful this next winter!
It turned out I didn’t see any good opportunities for grafting on the crab apple. By my understanding, this species will readily bud near the site of any pruning.

After this photo I did a little more pruning, which is visible above in the group photo.
