rooting hormone powder - cuttings

I have pictures of some top professionals using onion...but with close to 500 000 pictures on my PC can not find them.
Onion is good! Well that is my experience.
Neli,

Two days ago (Monday night), I chopped a 2.5" trident maple and saved the top. Applied onion on the sides and mixed some chopped pieces with the soil as well. I did not put any other rooting hormone.

My problem, the trident started leafing already so I know the cutting is weak from the get go. If it roots and make it, it will be an ultimate testament how well onion works (for me).

I now wait and see. :o

I dont think it is a good idea to put chopped onion it the soil...it will go moldy...rotten...Will it not affect the cutting? I am not sure...I dont know about that, but good luck...Did you put some kind of dome and warmth to it?
I found that if I cover trident cuttings with plastic dome they dont do as well as the ones left to root in the open. They get covered with fungus, and dont root. I just make sure I plant them in bonsai medium or very coarse sand and water them 2-3 times a day.
Some of my trident and trachelospermum cuttings: The cuttings are in the lower shelf.

Oops, not sure if it will get moldy. :D

I left it open under shade and used good draining soil. (sifted lava, pumice, turface, charcoal mix). No warmth but I kept it indoors for 36 hours when we had below freezing temps (same day I did the chop).

Is this a good time in your climate for cuttings as big as that? I have no idea...

It is a bit late actually (since the tree sprouted already) but the temps are still low--extended winter this year. The good news is it should be warming up soon.

Glad it made someone laugh. :)

It is yellow onion btw :p LOL

I've heard really good stuff about this rooting gel, I'm planning on ordering some real soon.

I just got some in from amazon. I plan on doing some high end cutting in two weeks with it. Ill let you know my results.
I did about 40 regular maples with no hormone this time just for fun. Ill let you know the results on them also.

I have used this product. It is supposed to stick to the cutting more than powder, but it really doesn't. It doesn't seem to work any better than powder either. It's the same hormone.

There is a new product that has the rooting gel contained in a small plastic tube that you place the cutting in. The tube keeps it moist and in contact with the rooting gel. You also can see the roots when they pop. I have not tried this yet but plan on trying some maple cuttings this spring.

Sorry many years working rooting, grafting, , and air layer HERE it just plain flat out simple works... No magic, no bullshit...

Can you link to that product? I'm interested in reading up on it. Thanks: )

What's your point ? That it works as good as the powder ? I have taken cuttings for many years and used both types. No difference.

I think the main thing is the after care and species and not necessarily the powder. I rooted a juniper trunk chop cutting with this old powder. The powder was around 6 or 7 years old. So it probably did nothing. This cutting is 3 times the size of normal juniper cuttings.

Rob

I took the cutting from this tree. I chopped off the top 1/3 or so.

Planted the cut off section in a grow pot.

Moved to a new pot. It will be able to be pruned and wired after 1 more year.

Wow!

There is a key to all of these preperations and methods. That key is acid.

Nearly any acid can stimulate root growth in woody plants. Willows, long time stimulant for roots is because of salicyllic acid, that which aspirin is made of. The acid is named for the plant, willow = salix.

IBA, indole-3-butyric acid, Is a synthetic acid that was found to induce rooting in woody plants. This is found in many cloning powders.

IAA, indole-3-acetic acid, is found in potatoes, which also has been found to induce rooting in woody plants. In many countries potatoes are used to make vinegar, acetic acid, as well as the famous Wodka.

The onion contains many sulphur compounds while forming the bulb. When cutting an onion, the sulphur fumes mix with the water in the eyes which causes irratation and crying. The irratation is caused from the fumes making sulphuric acid in the eyes. When rubbing the wet cutting on the onion, one makes this acid which works like many acid auxins and stimulates roots.

I agree but I find the Gel is easier for me to work with, not certain what you are getting at, I am pretty certain a lot of things work as Al has pointed out...

Just wondering where you came up with the magic and bullshit thing.

How is saying it is not magic or bullshit it just works for me offensive to you? I know most compounds have similar qualities and I just find using one product that works for me might be of interest to others here. You can tear into my ass all you want, Gel is easier to work with, yields good results and that is my story and I am standing by it :p
