I purchased from mrmaple.com last year in the summer so this is the first year I have seen it leaf out.

but yes I feel there are many different genetic varieties being sold under the name Arakawa.
I’m actually collecting different rough bark varieties from different sources to study similarities and differences
Haha mines from there as well. Maybe the sunlight/location here wasn't optimal.

Let me know if you manage to acquire Issai Nishiki Momiji. Starts barking up very young, fairly rare due to its slow growth habit.

Do you have a picture of your Arakawa from Mrmaple? I’d love to compare how they look, but I’m sure the scions came from the same mother plant.

I’ve never heard of Issai Nishiki until just now, I will add it to the list!
I have 3 arakawa plants that all look different so far
2 nishiki gawas
And 2 ibo nishikis on the way from evergreen garden works

Allen’s gold is on the top of my list to acquire!

How long has this been in training? Looking to replicate this exact trunk shape and proportion with a trident.

Does it always leaf out like that? I assume there are many different roughbarks out there under the name Arakawa.
It's 22 years old, I've seen his very first leaves ever, and its in training by me since then..

YUKI HIME (Snow Princess)

The leaves are consistently small, with a maximum of 3cm.

Imported from Japan in 2022. This cultivar is gaining popularity in the world of bonsai in Japan.

Here's my Shishigashira. The tiny leaves in spring were bright green and the color has deepened into a beautiful green.

I low-key looked for one for over 25 years until @Ohmy222 found a few somewhere online in 2019 and I jumped on this one. I put it in the ground and it’s about 4’ tall and 6-7’ wide now. Next year I may try a couple air layers, but have not tried to propagate it yet.

wow, yours has taken off. Glad it has worked out so well for you. I have propagated mine quite a bit but the original is now about 3ft tall or so and probably 1/2 the size of yours. I took four small layers. Three are going strong but the other limped through the spring and isn't as strong as I would hope.

Fresh out of the box from mr maple. A mikawa seedling and “mila”. I’m excited for both of these. Can’t wait till they get big!
