I will also be experimenting with his technique of using existing branches of a given tree to be used on other parts of the same tree via grafting with seedlings. I will be doing this on Japanese maples.

An intriguing and ingenious technique that I saw being applied first hand in Japan at Taisho-en a couple of years ago. Adair, I believe Boon has also done this correct? I think it is now becoming more widely used specially in Japan to improve the design on deciduous trees.

Maybe it is a horticultural observation!

Maybe they had it planted on the other side last year as Adair said!

Maybe the strong top on the short pot side....balances the roots.
Strong top, short pot side = x.
Weak top, long pot side = x.

you mean transplanting more mature branches? I've never done it, but read about it. Would like to see it.

It is also not uncommon for many of the "old pros" to sip Sake or similar in moderation to help steady the hand and nerves. They strike a happy medium and the work is not "rushed" ;)

If what it take is just to sip sake, im a pro no doubt..im in the mode(probably beyound )j to graft some branches right now
 
The whole tree is amazing. Totally artificially "manufactured".

He keeps a stockpile of branches ready to graft on.

The process: develop a nice branch on a donor tree. Graft on a rooted seedling. When the graft takes, cut the branch off the donor tree. The branch is supported by the seedling. When he needs to put a branch on a tree, he selects from all the branches he has on seedlings. He then grafts the branch on the new tree. When the graft takes, he removes the seedling. Frankentrees.

Fabulous, wonderful...! there is also a beautiful specimen in Murata's "Four Seasons of Bonsai" book. Don't know if it was his or belonged to the collection of the Imperial Household.

Good ones are hard to find. Suthin was selling one last summer on his web page, but it was already sold when I enquired.

There is a video somewhere of him using this technique to move an old branch on a tree to a different spot on the same tree.

Yes, although I was there recently and did not see it. It may have belonged to the Imperial Household.

Wrestle, or box is fine. Just don't bite my ear off!
 
This tree is developing well. This year it was not defoliated and was left alone only pruning back the strong shoots.










The nebari is also developing well. Every year this tree has been repotted taking the opportunity to make whatever corrections are needed mostly using small pieces of wood as spacers.

 
Sergio, Juan Andrade has done some of that “peg grafting” that Ebihara pioneered. You might want to talk with him next weekend about it.
